The Pittsburgh Steelers could coax a former player out of retirement to fill a major need.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could definitely stand to add some offensive line depth, and they could find it in a familiar face.

Steelers insider Alan Saunders has reported that Pittsburgh held a visit with guard Nate Herbig, who played for the Steelers the last couple of seasons before suddenly retiring, on Tuesday.

Herbig missed all of 2024 with a torn rotator cuff, but played in every game for Pittsburgh in 2023, making a couple of starts. He only played in 15 percent of the Steelers' offensive snaps, but he knows the system and could comprise a nice bench pickup, especially with Max Scharping out for the remainder of the campaign.

The 27-year-old then signed with the Washington Commanders back in March, but he proceeded to retire from the NFL in July.

Herbig went undrafted back in 2019 but landed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent three seasons and actually became a starter as soon as his sophomore campaign. He was actually very impressive in 2020, finishing with a 71.2 overall grade at Pro Football Focus.

Following his stint in Philadelphia, Herbig joined the New York Jets, where he proceeded to reside for one year before linking up with the Steelers in 2023.

Herbig might not get a whole lot of playing time if he does end up re-joining Pittsburgh, but, at the very least, the Steelers would know they have an offensive lineman with previous experience as a starter on the bench.

Pittsburgh has been having difficulty running the ball this season, and while Aaron Rodgers has been good for stretches, the pass protection has not been great.

The Steelers have gotten off to a 2-1 start, most recently defeating the New England Patriots by a score of 21-14 after forcing five turnovers. Obviously, Pittsburgh cannot depend on turning its opponents over that many times each week, so the Steelers have some things they need to fix as they proceed into Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The good news is that the rest of the AFC North doesn't look too impressive, so the Steelers should be able to make something happen here.
