During the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers swung a trade for wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and then signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, bringing some pizazz to an offense that desperately needed it.
Through the first three weeks of the 2025 campaign, however, Rodgers and Metcalf have not connected as most would like, as Metcalf has logged just 10 catches for 135 yards and a couple of touchdowns on 17 targets.
Rodgers opened up about potentially getting the ball more heading into the Steelers' Week 4 showdown with the Minnesota Vikings, and he said he has been taking what the defense gives him.
"Would love to get the ball to [Calvin Austin] and D.K. a lot more," Rodgers told reporters. "But the way teams are playing us, we've had to be a little more patient. We're trying to run the ball. I think we made some improvement in that phase last week, but there's a lot more room for improvement."
Rodgers has thrown for 586 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 65.1 percent of his passes and posting a 97.3 passer rating thus far. He put forth a brilliant season-opening performance against the New York Jets, tossing four touchdown passes, but has been mostly lackluster ever since.
Meanwhile, the Steelers have limited wide receiver depth behind Metcalf, allowing defenses to key on the former Seattle Seahawks star more effectively.
Metcalf broke into the NFL as a second-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2019 and posted three 1,000-yard campaigns in Seattle, topping out at 1,303 yards in 2020. Last year, he caught 66 passes for 992 yards and five scores.
Pittsburgh traded away George Pickens in May, which eliminated the team's chances of having a dynamic receiver duo. But perhaps the Steelers will try to make a move for another receiver (perhaps Tyreek Hill?) before the trade deadline in November.
Until then, Rodgers and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will have to think of inventive ways to consistently get Metcalf the ball.
