Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was an intern on Baltimore's coaching staff when Woodson played for the Ravens. Now Austin is getting the opportunity to coach Ramsey, acquired from the Miami Dolphins in an offseason trade.
What strikes Austin about Ramsey is the 10-year veteran's unselfishness. It was the same way when Austin and Woodson were together with the Ravens.
Woodson had been a seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback, six of those honors coming with the Steelers, when the Ravens asked him to move to free safety before the 1999 season. Woodson was selected to four more Pro Bowls before retiring after the 2003 season.
Ramsey has been to seven Pro Bowls as a cornerback. He also started at corner at the beginning of this season before being shifted to free safety last week because of injuries.
Ramsey played so well in the 27-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday that he will be back in the same role when the Steelers visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night. In fact, Ramsey might be the Steelers' long-term free safety as he has quickly embraced the role.
Austin is impressed by how willing Ramsey has been in making the positional transition.
"When the conversation came up, he knew where we were at the time at safety, and he'd do anything to win," Austin said. "Guys like him, man, they're just football players. They just love to play ball, and they love to win, and whatever you need to do to win, he's all for. And so, there was no problem. There was no kickback. It was actually like, 'OK, hey, what do you need me to do? Let's go.'"
Ramsey made five tackles last Sunday as the Steelers held the Colts, who lead the NFL in scoring, to two touchdowns. He also helped the league's leading rusher, Jonathan Taylor, to 45 yards on 14 carries.
"We'll keep Jalen where we need to keep him," Austin said. "Obviously, he did a heck of a job last week playing full-time free safety for us. Really did a good job. He can overlap, he can run, he's just a good football player. So we'll see where that leads us moving forward."
