Minnesota Vikings players are frustrated after a 19-17 loss to the Chicago Bears knocked the team further into the NFC North basement on Sunday. It's starting to get frustrating for fans, too.
The team is good enough as currently constructed to compete for a playoff spot. The defense is solid, the skill talent is present and the team is competitive in most games, if not every game. Sunday was no different as the team secured a 17-16 lead with 50 seconds left. How they got there was not pretty.
The Vikings trailed 16-3 heading into the fourth quarter after generating hardly any offense on the day. The running game was solid rushing for over five yards per carry. Justin Jefferson had five catches for 61 yards. Even Jordan Addison reeled in the go-ahead score. Minnesota simply did not get enough from its quarterback J.J. McCarthy to move the needle.
Vikings fans took note in a frustrating response to a McCarthy misfire to an open receiver on third down. After the incomplete pass forced a Minnesota punt, the crowd rained down with boos of the offensive ineptitude.
Minnesota is not necessarily upset with only McCarthy's performance. He's not the only imperfect player on the offensive side. Certainly, others have made errors over the course of the season. Even so, they are not thrilled with the net result: another sub-200 yard passing performance and less than 20 points scored against a defense that can be scored upon this year.

McCarthy's ability to go from unplayable to clutch is among the more confounding aspects of his game. After playing poorly for three quarters, the young signal caller found a way to bring Minnesota back with 14 unanswered points to give the team a 17-16 lead after trailing by 13. The ability is certainly present, but it has not shown up consistently. The lack of consistency is leading to losses.
The patience of the fanbase will be worth monitoring as that could, for better or worse, have a subconscious effect on the organization and Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell's decision making. Vikings fans are ready to win and ready to see a successful product after a decade of contention in the NFC. And right now, they're simply not seeing it in their 4-6 squad.
The Vikings will look to shake off the loss and find solutions with seven games to play in the 2025 season.
