The Vikings enter Week 12 with a tough game against the Green Bay Packers on the slate for Sunday afternoon. And while going into Lambeau Field and getting a victory will be far from easy, the Vikings shouldn’t be counted out.
There are really two schools of thought when evaluating the Packers. On one hand, they might be better than their record suggests at 6-3-1. There have been several games the Packers had no business losing and still did. But on the other hand, that’s the point — the Packers have repeatedly struggled against teams they’re heavily favored against.
They tied a Dallas Cowboys team that hasn’t been competitive this year. They lost to the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns. They barely snuck by the Cardinals, winning by only four. They beat the Giants by just a touchdown last week — a New York team missing most of its key offensive weapons and playing without its starting quarterback.
All of it points to the same conclusion: while this won’t be an easy game for Minnesota, it’s the exact type of matchup Green Bay has lost this season.
Most of the Packers’ issues have come on offense. Their defense generally shows up. Just last week against the Eagles, the Packers allowed only 10 points but could score only 7. The week before in the loss to Carolina, they allowed just 16 but managed only 13. That’s why this game could come down to Minnesota maximizing every possession. Instead of being overly aggressive on fourth down in plus territory, there’s a real argument for simply taking the points. Scoring fewer than 20 points has still been good enough to beat this Packers team more than once this season.
If the Vikings can leave Lambeau with just one touchdown and a trio of field goals, that might be enough. It’s another big test for J.J. McCarthy and another test for a Minnesota defense that has been inconsistent, but this is the exact type of game that can swing on one star-level performance. All it takes is Justin Jefferson having one of those takeover moments — the kind where he proves to be unguardable. And considering the Packers’ secondary has been one of the more inconsistent units on the Packers' otherwise great defense, those opportunities will be there.
Don’t be surprised if the Vikings walk out of Lambeau handing the Packers their third consecutive loss.
