Manchester United has confirmed in the last few days that former Borussia Dortmund star boy, Jadon Sancho, will depart the club at the end of his contract on June 30th.

What Went Wrong For The England International at Manchester United?

Jadon Sancho's time at Manchester United, and subsequently in the Premier League as a whole, can be described in one word: underwhelming.

The winger signed for the red side of Manchester for a reported fee of £73 million, the 3rd highest sale in Borussia Dortmund's history.

This was off the back of several impressive years for Jadon Sancho while playing for Borussia Dortmund. Starring on the left wing, the English forward scored 50 goals and 57 assists in 137 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

Seen as the next English superstar, his move to Manchester United never really took off. In his debut season, he got 5 goals and 3 assists in 38 games for the club, and that was followed up the following season with a similarly underwhelming number of goals and assists, with 7 goals and 3 assists across 41 games.

Opportunities Away From Manchester United

Then, following only 3 appearances in the first half of the 2023/24 season, Jadon Sancho was given a lifeline to try and get his career back on track, back at a club he knew well, Borussia Dortmund.

His return to the Bundesliga was watched eagerly by many, despite showing glimpses of his former self, the numbers did not match anywhere near what he had done previously at the club, clocking 3 goals and 2 assists across 21 games for Borussia Dortmund in the 2nd half of that season.

Despite this loan spell not seeming to be that good, it was enough to convince Chelsea to take him in on loan for a season.

He would go on to have his best season in the Premier League to date, scoring 5 goals and registering 8 assists in 41 games for the London-based club. However, despite Chelsea having the option to buy Jadon Sancho, they opted not to, having had an initial obligation to buy, decided to pay the break clause of that obligation to buy and sent him back to Manchester.

Then comes the campaign just gone, where Jadon Sancho spent the season out on loan at Premier League side Aston Villa. Now both Aston Villa and Jadon Sancho will have been hoping to try and replicate something similar to what Marcus Rashford was able to achieve at Villa Park, who got 9 goal contributions in 17 games for Aston Villa.

Jadon Sancho, while he was part of the team that won the UEFA Europa League, he only contributed to 4 goal contributions in 39 appearances, failing to really nail down a starting spot in Unai Emery's side.

Author's Verdict: Where Does Jadon Sancho Go From Here?

So that leads us to now, he has been released by Manchester United and is a free agent, but where does he go next?

In terms of concrete links as to where he could end up, there are not many. However, Jadon Sancho has been back at Borussia Dortmund since his move to Manchester United and arguably had his most successful season since leaving the Signal Iduna Park 5 years ago.

Therefore, there seems to be a possibility that Jadon Sancho could move back to Borussia Dortmund on a permanent deal this summer, mainly due to his previous ties with the club.

Furthermore, this would fit the club's aims of looking for some attacking reinforcements this summer, and a fit and firing Jadon Sancho would certainly provide that, but can Borussia Dortmund get him back to that level when many other clubs tried and failed, and is it worth the gamble?
