PSG teenager Pierre Mounguengue was targeted with racist insults on social media after his debut mistake led to Lorient's equalizer.
For his big debut with PSG at the Parc des Princes, Pierre Mounguengue made a mistake and gave Lorient the equalizing goal. But head coach Luis Enrique does not hold it against the young player, while on social media, the Parisian was the target of racist insults.
Mounguengue, 18, probably dreamed of a better start for his first minutes in Ligue 1 with PSG on Saturday at the Parc des Princes.
It was a loss of possession that allowed the Merlus to recover the ball and race toward the second goal, which meant the equalizer for Lorient.
However, far from wanting to blame the player, Enrique said he had not discussed this with him at all, believing it was useless to react impulsively without a more complete analysis of his players' individual performances.
In other words, Mounguengue is old enough to understand that he made a blunder on this play, but that it was part of a match that was not so simple to manage for PSG.
"I never speak to players after a match. A coach, at that moment, is always conditioned by the result and emotion, so you must not say anything. I have perhaps spoken once or twice in fifteen years, to highlight a positive point, but it is never the right time. When the match is over, you cannot fix anything. I learned a long time ago that you must not say anything after a match; everyone is tired, and I seek to control my emotions," said Luis Enrique, who acknowledged that his player must have been impressed.
"It is not easy, the first time at the Parc. It is a very positive atmosphere, but not easy to manage." But even though the Parisian coach was tolerant, the worst came from social media.
Because what the PSG coach did not yet know was that at the same time, some internet users were launching racist insults against Mounguengue on X and Instagram. A lamentable and reprehensible attitude, but not even surprising, just one week after the LFP campaign against all forms of discrimination.
