A modest fourth-tier club eliminated Manchester United on penalties, 12-11, but now there is a setback on the table.
On the 27th of August, one of the most surprising results in England took place, as the modest Grimsby Town, from the fourth tier, eliminated Manchester United from the second round of the Carabao Cup, although a setback has now arisen for them.
It turns out that the English Football League (EFL) has made public that Grimsby Town fielded a player who was not eligible, as his registration was done 1 minute late, which means they could be disqualified from the Carabao Cup and 'save' Manchester United.
Through a statement, the EFL informed that the Carabao Cup Management Committee detected an anomaly in Grimsby's registrations, as a player was not eligible to play in the match.
The fourth-tier club entered Clarke Oduor's data at 00:01 hrs, when the maximum period was 00:00 on the day before the game against Manchester United; therefore, as such, it would be classified as a possible improper fielding.
English football authorities have imposed a fine of €20,000 on Grimsby, of which €10,000 is paid immediately, and the other half remains pending, in case they field another ineligible player again.
"After a thorough review of all the evidence and considering previous decisions taken regarding breaches in the League Cup, the Board determined that issuing a fine followed precedent (…) it also noted that the Club's breach was not deliberate nor intended to deceive or confuse," it reads.
It is for this reason that it is now being reported that Manchester United would have 5 days to decide if they want to appeal the result and, thus, if English football authorities determine it is appropriate, obtain a pass to the third round of the Carabao Cup, although there has been no response so far.
