Things weren't necessarily pretty for the Tulane Green Wave, but the team got the job done with a 27-0 win over the Charlotte 49ers to end the regular season with a 10-2 record and officially punch a ticket to the American Conference Championship game.
All in all, it was a tough game for quarterback Jake Retzlaff; he had one of his least productive outings of the season, going 28-for-38 passing for 291 yards and a pair of interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback did muster two rushing touchdowns on four carries, but netted -4 total rushing yards.
Freshmen running backs Jamauri McClure and Javin Gordon received a nearly equal amount of reps and both made the most of their opportunities. McClure notched a team-high 69 yards on 11 carries, but he made his first crucial mistake of the season with a fumble in the second quarter. Gordon added 44 yards and one touchdown on nine carries. On the receiving end, Anthony Brown-Stephens was the biggest difference maker with 98 total yards on 9 receptions -- more than double the amount of catches than any other student-athlete had.
Looking at the offense as a whole, it's hard to ask for a much better team effort. Sure, a win over Charlotte isn't exactly a metric to measure success, but there's something to be said for the Green Wave's 463 total yards and 50-percent third-down conversion rate. At this point, turnovers are the biggest issue for the team, but that's a bit out of the norm when compared to the rest of this season.
Now... let's talk about that defense.
For the first time this season, Tulane's defense held its opponent scoreless, and the unit put up some impressive numbers while doing so. The 49ers finished the day with -3 total rushing yards and only 143 total passing yards while going just 2-for-13 on third down conversions and picking up just seven total first downs. Additionally, the Green Wave secondary continued to impressive with two picks.
There's still plenty to clean up for Tulane, as this was a game that the program was expected to completely control. Even with an easy victory, there were still plenty of points left on the field.
Now, the Green Wave has to turn its attention to some bigger goals. The American Conference Championship game will officially run through Yulman Stadium, as Tulane will host the North Texas Mean Green on Friday with a potential College Football Playoff spot on the line.
With a massive, potentially-historic game looming and some uncertainty surrounding head coach Jon Sumrall, a big week lies ahead in Uptown.
