After months of rehab and patience, the highly-rated Italian defender is finally closing in on the comeback Liverpool supporters have been waiting for.
Are you excited to see Giovanni Leoni return to competitive football this October?
Giovanni Leoni’s Liverpool career has barely had the chance to begin. Now, more than a year after his dream debut ended in devastating fashion, the young Italian is finally approaching the moment he has spent countless hours working towards.
Return Date Approaching
The 19-year-old centre-back is expected to return to full Liverpool training this month, with Gregg Evans reporting at The Athletic that the week commencing 12th October is the most likely timeframe.
It represents a major milestone for Leoni, who has been sidelined since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on his Liverpool debut against Southampton in September 2025.
That night should have been remembered as his arrival at Anfield. Instead, after an impressive 81 minutes, Leoni landed awkwardly following a challenge and was forced from the pitch. Then manager Arne Slot subsequently confirmed the ACL tear and warned he faced around a year on the sidelines.
What followed was the less glamorous side of football: surgery, rehabilitation and months spent watching from the outside.

Yet Leoni appears to have used that time wisely. According to reports, the Italian remained on Merseyside throughout his rehabilitation rather than returning home, allowing him to strengthen relationships with Liverpool staff, learn more about the club and improve his English.
No Rush To Return
Liverpool will naturally refuse to rush him. Returning to full training is one thing; being ready for Premier League football after more than 12 months out is another entirely.
There had already been optimism surrounding his recovery. In July, head coach Andoni Iraola described Leoni as the closest to returning of Liverpool’s three longer-term absentees at the time, while in September he revealed the plan was for the defender to begin working with the squad during the international break.
Liverpool Future To Take Shape
Leoni was signed as one for Liverpool’s future, but that future could now begin to take shape. At 19, there is no need for him to immediately carry the burden of Liverpool’s defence. His first challenge is simply getting back onto the pitch and rediscovering the rhythm that was cruelly taken away from him.
Liverpool fans only got an 81-minute glimpse the first time around. Soon, Leoni could finally get the opportunity to properly introduce himself.
