With Barcelona circling, first-team opportunities fading and a £30million price tag reportedly enough to tempt Liverpool into selling, could the Dutchman’s Liverpool story be over almost as quickly as it began?
Should Liverpool consider selling Jeremie Frimpong to Barcelona?
Yes, we have better right-back options
0%No, we need him for squad depth
0%Jeremie Frimpong arrived at Liverpool as one of the most exciting attacking full-backs in Europe. Little more than a year later, his Anfield future is already being questioned, with Barcelona reportedly watching closely.
Barcelona’s Shortlist
According to Spanish journalist Juan Jesus, Barcelona have placed the Netherlands international on their shortlist of potential right-back signings. The report claims Frimpong would be “very open” to joining the Catalan giants, while Liverpool could sanction a departure for around £30-35million.
It would represent a remarkably quick change of direction for a player Liverpool signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5million in 2025.

Frimpong arrived with serious pedigree. He had been one of the driving forces behind Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023/24, scoring nine league goals and providing seven assists. Across his Bundesliga career, he registered 23 goals and 25 assists in 133 appearances.
Those numbers made him look tailor-made for an aggressive Liverpool side. The reality at Anfield has been far more complicated.
Liverpool Career So Far
Frimpong has made 40 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, scoring twice and registering two assists, with injuries and uncertainty over his best position disrupting his momentum. During his first Premier League campaign he made 21 appearances, while this season he has featured only three times in the league, accumulating 179 minutes without a goal or assist.
That is the strange thing about Frimpong. Liverpool haven’t really seen the player who terrorised Bundesliga defences.
At Leverkusen, he was given licence to fly forward from wing-back, almost operating as an additional attacker. At Liverpool, he has been required to function within a more conventional back four while also occasionally being used further forward. Last season, 71.4 per cent of his appearances came at right-back, with the remainder on the wing.

Under Andoni Iraola, the situation appears to have become even more difficult. Reports suggest Ronald Araujo has been preferred at right-back, despite the Uruguayan naturally being a centre-half. Frimpong has started just two Premier League matches this season and played only 31 minutes in the Champions League.
That makes the Barcelona story one Liverpool fans should probably keep an eye on without treating it as a done deal.
Frimpong remains under contract until 2030 and, at 25, there is still plenty of football ahead of him. His pace, energy and attacking instincts haven’t suddenly disappeared.
But football moves quickly. If Iraola doesn’t see Frimpong as his long-term right-back and Barcelona’s interest develops into something concrete, Liverpool could effectively recover what they paid for him.
For a signing that once looked like the beginning of Liverpool’s post-Trent era, that would be a surprisingly short Anfield story.
