Purdy's rough outing against Carolina revealed rust and decision-making hiccups. Can he shake off early-season struggles for a playoff run?

Despite the San Francisco 49ers getting the win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football, it wasn’t a flawless outing by any means. There were several things the Niners will want to clean up moving forward and take away from this game, while obviously still being happy with the victory.

Among the most notable negatives was Brock Purdy’s performance. The quarterback, still working his way back from injury, threw three first half interceptions, and that naturally begs the question: Is there a real reason for concern with him at the helm?

    The short answer is no.

For starters, he’s still going to need time to get back to his full self after the injury, rebuild chemistry with his offensive weapons, and generally get back into a rhythm. He had a pretty poor performance overall — fewer than 200 passing yards, one touchdown — and on the season, he has thrown seven interceptions to just eight touchdowns with the worst quarterback rating of his career.

There’s certainly nothing about Purdy’s production this season that suggests he’s playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he’s also proven he can win at the highest level. He’s done it in the regular season, he’s done it in the playoffs, he’s done it with depleted rosters. Purdy has shown time and time again that he’s capable.

Still, this game did expose some of his weaknesses.

His timing under duress wasn’t sharp, and his inability to consistently make throws down the field was evident. It felt like he had to dink and dunk for much of the night with underneath routes and short throws, hoping his receivers could create yards after the catch. The biggest issues came when he was forced to make a big play or fit the ball into a tight window, and that comes down to decision-making and precision. Both are things he’s proven he can do throughout his career.

This has been an injury-riddled season for Purdy, and coming back into a tough spot and looking rusty isn’t surprising. It’s not his best season by any stretch, but if he can settle in and regain his rhythm over the next few weeks before the playoffs, there’s no question he can still lead this Niners team on a deep postseason run.

Purdy's next chance to get back on track and build some momentum will be next Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
