Set your lineups wisely! This NFC West showdown offers elite options but treacherous stay-away zones. Navigate injuries and quarterback questions to maximize fantasy points.
The 49ers and Cardinals meet this week in a matchup that offers a few intriguing fantasy options and several major stay away spots. With injuries, quarterback uncertainty, and two inconsistent defenses, fantasy managers need to tread carefully when setting lineups for this NFC West showdown.
49ers: Only One Guaranteed Start — Christian McCaffrey
Let’s keep it simple: Christian McCaffrey is the only 49ers player you can confidently lock into your lineup.
With Brock Purdy returning from his toe injury under center the quarterback situation doesn’t offer enough fantasy upside to justify starting him. Purdy is starting his first game after working back to full health, while he is steady, this likely won't be an explosive game from him from a fantasy standpoint. Arizona has been vulnerable defensively, but not enough to transform either QB into a must start for points.
Even with Brock Purdy under center, CMC is the engine of the offense and he should continue to dominate touches. Expect heavy volume, red zone usage, and his usual elite floor.
Managers in deeper leagues may monitor Brian Robinson Jr.’s workload as he gains traction in Shanahan’s rotation, but he’s still more of a touchdown dependent flex dart than a safe play.
Cardinals: Martin Harrison Jr. Leads the Way
With Arizona’s running back room banged up and Jacoby Brissett starting again at quarterback, the Cardinals’ offense leans heavily on rookie standout Marvin Harrison Jr.
Harrison has quickly become the focal point of the passing game and remains the most trustworthy fantasy option on the Cardinals’ roster. Brissett isn’t Kyler Murray, but he’s efficient enough to support Harrison as a WR2 with upside, especially against a 49ers defense that has been decimated by injuries in the front seven.
If you’re in deeper formats, you can consider a secondary Cardinals receiver as a desperation flex, but Harrison is the only player with strong weekly value.
Sit Both Defenses
This is not the week to trust either DST.
San Francisco’s defense is missing multiple starters, especially in the trenches and at linebacker, which has lowered their turnover production and raised their floor for points allowed. Meanwhile, Arizona’s defense has struggled all year, giving up yardage on the ground and through the air, and they lack consistent pass rush.
Both teams can move the ball enough to hurt fantasy defenses but both defenses have too many vulnerabilities to feel safe starting.
Bottom Line
- Start: Christian McCaffrey, Marvin Harrison Jr.
- Sit: Both quarterbacks, both defenses
- Flex Considerations Only: Brian Robinson Jr. (TD-dependent), secondary Arizona WRs (deep leagues)
This matchup has a few reliable names, but unless you’re rolling out CMC or Harrison Jr., it’s a week to pump the brakes on most fantasy picks here.
