From promising debut to defensive bedrock, Jan Paul Van Hecke's journey to 100 Premier League games showcases an extraordinary rise for Brighton's Dutch international.
Albion's leading defender, and stand-up leading Dutch international centre-back, Jan Paul Van Hecke, reaches 100 Premier League appearances for the club.
Van Hecke has had one of the most remarkable and meteoric rises at the club. In recent times. As far as any players can go at one club, very little can compare to the manner in which Van Hecke has turned into a modern Brighton hero.
How did it all start?
His star qualities are, without a doubt, his leadership. Van Hecke will put absolutely any part of his body on the line if it is for the greater good of the side. Make no mistake, this is not in a clumsy way either (for the most part!) Van Hecke loves his last-ditch challenges and glory slide tackles, which the fans in the stands always celebrate as much as a goal!
It didn't start traditionally for Van Hecke. When the Dutchman first broke into the side, there were serious question marks over his potential. According to rumours at the time, he was almost not even offered another contract at the club!
Often appearing quite clumsy and weak with the ball at his feet. Van Hecke looked mistake-prone and, defensively, very shaky. There were no initial signs that we would be watching a potential Brighton captain of the future. Many fans had him in mind as a fringe player, with loans for Levi Colwill from Chelsea at the time, pipping his chances of first-team football.
Van Hecke's first moment to shine was against the Champions, Manchester City. City had already won the league, but their trip to the Amex in 2023 was still a vital game for the Seagulls. Roberto De Zerbi had him operating in a manner I hadn't seen before from a defender. Breaking away from the defence, flooding the midfield and even crashing the box. Defensively, he will always be remembered for the game where he tried his best and succeeded (mostly) in locking up Erling Haaland.
The performance was capped by a Puskas runner-up goal from Julio Enciso to all-but guarantee European football for Brighton. A day to truly never forget!
How good is Van Hecke? How good could he be?
Since then, Van Hecke has been a staple of every game for the club. During the period of time he broke into the side, Lewis Dunk faced serious competition to no longer be associated with being the club's best defender. Fast forward to now, and we have the same situation with Van Hecke!
Leadership qualities that are living proof of a future captain. Van Hecke has become a stand-up member of the Albion community and is always the first to address the fans at full-time. After putting in die-hard performances and showing a strong mentality every single week, still having the care and desire to connect with the fanbase is the true example of the sort of character and person he is.
From my brief interactions through the media and my encounters with the man himself, I can only say good things about Van Hecke. Someone who will take the time to chat, but also act incredibly down-to-earth. Much like the rest of this Albion squad, we truly do have some of football's 'good guys'.
With Van Hecke's defensive capabilities being recognised, and as much as he does love a strong challenge, his ability on the ball cannot be understated. The phrase 'Rolls-Royce' gets thrown around a lot these days, but that is JP. Confidence, technically gifted and assured. When Van Hecke is in possession, you feel comfortable. We've even seen him playing midfield stints, and pushed up front in latter ends of games! A true modern defender.
Van Hecke has become a catalyst for all things good at Brighton. A player who, if he were to extend his contract, has the potential to become the next club legend. If Brighton could reach European football again this season, we are talking about a defender who has already broken historic records at the club.
At only 25-years-old, the Dutch international has a long career ahead of him. Big clubs are likely to be interested in his services this summer, with his contract expiring in 2027— subject, of course, to potential renewals before the end of the season.
The World Cup could be a huge opportunity to showcase just how good he actually is. The Netherlands' pool of defenders is impressive, but with Virgil Van Dijk not getting any younger, Van Hecke has a real opportunity to stake his claim.
Whatever happens in the summer, it is fair to say Jan Paul Van Hecke's achievement should be celebrated, and it is even better after a big three points up in Burnley!
The world of football is chaotic, loud and messy... but then there is JP.
