Celtic's biggest problem in recent years has been their recruitment. In fact, that has been an issue for quite some time. The two years under the management of Ange Postecoglou had brought a welcome change to this process, as the Hoops had shown an impressive efficiency, getting deals done as soon as the transfer windows opened, and also had a solid success rate when it came to new signings.
Unfortunately, the club have gone back to square one after Postecoglou left. One can only wonder why the Australian was given the backing that pretty much nobody else has received.
One thing is pretty clear though, there needs to be changes made to the recruitment process if the club want to hold to their domestic success while also taking some positive steps in Europe.
Fortunately, it looks like changes could be on the way when it comes to the club's recruitment process. According to The Celtic Way, Martin O'Neill said: "I am sure that the new manager coming in, and Celtic should be on the search now, should be looking and have his own scouting system up and running.
"There will be a more robust look at how we approach the transfer market. Sometimes it does go to the last minute, but it’s about having things in place and up and running, not like last year."
That is a clear acknowledgement from O'Neill that things are not fine as they are when it comes to the recruitment process. Now, it will be about making the right changes to make sure that the club are staying up with the times. There is no reason for them to struggle so badly in every transfer window.
Wilfried Nancy's disastrous eight-game run with the club also came with the departure of Paul Tisdale. When asked about a replacement, O'Neill replied: "I don’t know, but I assume that some sort of structure will come in that takes all of that into consideration."
O'Neill himself is set to leave the club at the end of the season. He is only in interim charge until the summer. Of course, if this proves to be a successful campaign, then there will be calls from the fans for him to continue in his role. But the reality of the matter is that the Northern Irishman is 73 years of age and is not a long-term solution for the Hoops. They will need to bring in someone new, sooner or later. Whoever that turns out to be will need the backing of the club in the transfer market.
