The Ole Miss head coach did not act too fondly to Venables saying his team was simply out-executed in Saturday's game

While the scoreboard already indicated a 34-26 win for Ole Miss over Oklahoma, a battle of words has continued to be exchanged in the days that followed.

After the loss to Ole Miss, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said on his Sunday coach’s show that he felt like his team played well overall, but Oklahoma made critical mistakes when Ole Miss did not.

"I felt like we were the better team, but at the end of the day, this is a game of performance and executing," Venables said. "I thought they out-executed us when it mattered the most."

An odd statement from a head coach to basically say he had the more talented team, but was outcoached at home. Nonetheless, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin responded and did not take too fondly to Venables’ comments.

When Kiffin was asked in his Monday press conference about what Venables had said, Kiffin stated, “That's a hot take, they had the better team," Kiffin said. "I wouldn't have thought people watching would say that. I felt that, for one, we won at their place. … We won by eight points, and I think we left a lot out there. I think we should've won by a couple scores. I don't know how he evaluated that game that they were the better team.

"I mean, we had way more yards. We had 21 downs to 14. We played 87 plays of offense, and they had one sack and didn't force any turnovers. That's an interesting take. Whatever he needs to say. Maybe he had the better team last year too when we beat them."

Before any reporters could follow-up to Kiffin’s comments, the Rebels’ head coach pointed to his prior history facing Venables, “Maybe he had the better team at Oklahoma when we beat them 55-19 in the national championship," Kiffin said. "Maybe he had the better team when we beat them 45-40 in the national championship at Alabama."

Kiffin was referencing the 2005 Orange Bowl National Championship, where he was an offensive assistant at USC, as the Trojans hammered Oklahoma, Venables was the Sooners’ defensive coordinator.

The other game Kiffin was referring to was the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship. Kiffin was the offensive coordinator at Alabama, and got the best of Clemson, with Venables coordinating the Tigers’ defense.

The verbal sparring predates the game. Days earlier, Kiffin had praised Venables for his "film study of signals," which Venables labeled a "weird kind of compliment."
