LUBBOCK, Texas - Award season continues to chug along for the No. 4-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, who have nearly a month off before their College Football Playoff bout in the quarterfinals against either No. 5 Oregon or No. 12 James Madison.
For star linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, it's been an especially busy week.
Rodriguez did not receive an invite to New York for the Heisman Trophy, but he did win the Butkus Award (nation's best linebacker) and Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player) to cap a dominant season in the Scarlet and Black.
On Tuesday, it wasn't just Rodriguez adding to his trophy collection.
Edge rusher David Bailey - who finished second in the FBS in sacks with 13.5 - joined alongside Rodriguez in receiving the Pony Express Award, given to the most outstanding duo in college football.
Rodriguez has already lived up to the preseason prediction and won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award. Bailey, defensive tackles Lee Hunter and Romello Height, and defensive back Brice Pollock also earned First Team honors from the conference.
Once the All-American teams began rolling out, you could bet that Tech's dynamic duo made the cut, as well.
Rodriguez and Bailey were each named First Team All-Americans by CBS Sports and On3.
Hunter was an All-America Second-Team selection by CBS and defensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr. was a Second-Team honoree by On3.
The AP All-America poll is also expected to come out in the coming weeks.
In Tech's Big 12 Championship win last week, it was Rodriguez's running-mate Ben Roberts earning hardware after becoming the first player ever to have two interceptions in the conference title game. He received defensive player of the game honors as he anchored a Red Raiders defense that caused four BYU turnovers in the second half of the 34-7 blowout win.
"Just proud of them. I'm so proud of this team," head coach Joey McGuire said after the win. "I think we've got the best coaching staff in the world. We've got the best administration staff in the world. We've got the best fans in the world."
