McGuire's "weirdos" embrace high stakes as Texas Tech is chasing a Big 12 title and a historic College Football Playoff shot.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire characterizes himself a "weirdo.''

But only in the very best way. And as far as Red Raiders fans are concerned, only in the "biggest'' way.“

The bigger the game, the more that is on the line, I guess I’m a weirdo,'' McGuire said. "But I love this time of year.''

In truth, there's nothing "weird'' about what drives McGuire or his No. 4-ranked Red Raiders, who are 11-1 and are set to play one of the biggest gmes in school history on Saturday.

On tap? they face No. 11 BYU, also 11-1, in the Big 12 championship game here in Arlington at AT&T Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The game will be televised nationally on ABC. The building will be sold out. And with the chance for Tech to play in and to in the Big 12 title game for the first time since 1955 also comes something else ...Tech also has a chance to secure its first-ever bid to the College Football Playoff.

This will mark the second time in the last month that these two teams will meet. Tech beat the Cougars, 29-7 in Lubbock on Nov. 8.

The Red Raiders are favored to do it again.

“I love it when games mean so much that if you win, you get another game,” he said. “If you lose, then the season’s over. That’s kind of where we’re at right now, so the bigger the game to get to the next moment, the more pressure, but the more fun it is.”

And there's nothing "weird'' about it.
