Subject of ICC arrest warrant denies claims she unlawfully deported children to Russia
Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights has rejected International Criminal Court (ICC) allegations that she is responsible for unlawfully deporting children from Ukraine. The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and children’s commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova for the war crime of hundreds of children allegedly being taken from orphanages and children’s care homes in areas of Ukraine claimed by Russia. Some children, the ICC said, had been given up for adoption in Russia. But Ms Lvova-Belova told reporters on Tuesday that her commission had acted on humanitarian grounds to protect children in a militarised area, and had not moved anyone against their will or that of their parents or legal guardians, whose consent was always sought unless they were missing.Children were not given up for adoption but were placed with temporary legal guardians in foster homes, she insisted.“As far as the ICC’s accusations are concerned, we don’t understand what we are accused of. Give us the facts and we will look into it. So far, it all looks like a farce without specifics and is incomprehensible,” she said. The ICC had not submitted any documents to her office, Ms Lvova-Belova said, noting that Russia did not recognise the court’s jurisdiction anyway. Ukraine has not sent any official requests regarding children allegedly separated from their parents, she claimed. Source:

UN council extends Ukraine inquiry into crimes since Russia's invasion
The United Nations Human Rights Council has overwhelmingly voted in favour of extending the mandate of an investigative body probing possible war crimes committed since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.Twenty-eight countries voted in favour of extending the mandate of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine by a year. Seventeen abstained and two voted against the body, which Ukraine says is essential for keeping Russia accountable for its crimes.“The scope and brutality of Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine are simply beyond any human comprehension,” Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Yevheniia Filipenko, told the Council ahead of the vote.“We strongly believe that the continued work of the Commission in further investigating, documenting and reporting human rights violations and international crimes committed against the people in Ukraine could save more innocent lives (and) could contribute to accountability for perpetrators and justice for victims.”In a report published last month, the commission found that some crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, including the use of torture and attacks against the country’s energy infrastructure, could constitute crimes against humanity. Paranoid Putin stays in bunker because he 'fears for his life', says ex-security guard
Vladimir Putin is a “war criminal” who is “pathologically afraid for his life”, a former protection officer of the president who defected from Russia has said.In an incendiary interview with Dossier, Gleb Karakulov, 35, a captain in the Federal Guard Service, pleaded with his former colleagues to come forward with evidence against Putin and end the war in Ukraine.“I would like to address Russian officers, including the FGS officers,” Karakulov, who escaped to safety via Istanbul, said. “You have information that is not broadcast on television. I have only seen a tiny part of it. Come forward, support me [with more evidence]. You will help our citizens to learn the truth.”He went on: “How many nameless victims of this war are there, how many of them are children? How many more such victims are required before you stop putting up with it?“What is happening now in Ukraine, all this destruction, this war of aggression, terrorism, and genocide of the Ukrainian people – there is no other word for it – all this is a criminal offence.“Our president has become a war criminal.” In a message to the Russian people, Karakulov said Putin had “lost touch with the world” having lived in an “an information cocoon for the past couple of years, spending most of his time in his residences, which the media very fittingly call bunkers.”Putin is “pathologically afraid for his own life,” he said, explaining that the president “surrounds himself with an impenetrable barrier of quarantines and an information vacuum.“He only values his own life and the lives of his family and friends. The lives of your family and friends are of no interest to him.“By tearing men from their families and sending them to be slaughtered in sovereign Ukraine, he shows he does not care in the least about what is happening to our country and Ukraine, about the fact that he brings trouble, destruction, and death to the brotherly people of Ukraine and to us.”In his closing remarks, Karakulov declared that Putin’s “criminal war” must be ended as soon as possible.“Life is the highest value. We have forgotten it in this country. People are considered cannon fodder.“This will continue to be the case as long as we remain silent. This war has to end and it is time to break the silence.” Source: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/ukraine-russia-war-putin-finland-nato-b2313588.html#post-1134110

Russian defence minister says Finland joining Nato raises risk of conflict
Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu has said that Finland’s accession to the Nato military alliance and the bloc’s move to boost its own combat-readiness increased the risk of conflict.Shoigu also said that some Belarusian military jets were now capable of carrying nuclear warheads and that Iskander rocket systems had been transferred to Belarus, which could be used to carry conventional or nuclear missiles. Russia claims it has accepted over 5 million refugees from Ukraine
Russia has accepted more than 5 million refugees from Ukraine‘s Donbas region, including 730,000 children, since February 2022, Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights has claimed.Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian commissioner for children’s rights, said that the children came with their parents or guardians. She told a Moscow news conference her commission was not aware of a single case of a child from eastern Ukraine being separated from their blood relatives and being transferred to a foster home. Lvova-Belova was responding to allegations from the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) which on March 17 issued arrest warrants for her and President Vladimir Putin for the war crime of unlawfully deporting children from areas of Ukraine occupied by Russian forces.Lvova-Belova said the allegations were false. With no peace in sight, NATO countries eye more Ukraine help
Ukraine’s Western allies have sent the country 65 billion euros ($70 billion) in military aid to help thwart Russia’s full-scale invasion, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday, and with no peace negotiations on the horizon the alliance is gearing up to send more.“We cannot allow Russia to continue to chip away at European security,” Stoltenberg told a news conference in Brussels, adding “there are no signs that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is preparing for peace. Zelensky commemorates ordeal of villagers held captive in basement
President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday paid tribute to the courage of nearly 400 residents of a village in north Ukraine who were held in a school basement under Russian occupation for 27 days before they were set free a year ago.The Ukrainian leader travelled to Yahidne, where he gave an emotional speech recalling how villagers were kept captive in a space less than 200 square metres during the first month of Russia’s February 2022 invasion. He said that 11 people died during the ordeal."These people somehow lived and waited for Ukraine in the dark," said Zelenskiy who appeared visibly moved on the anniversary. "They lived standing and sitting."Mr Zelensky was joined on the visit to Yahidne, a village in Chernihiv region, by German vice-chancellor Robert Habeck and Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric. Oil producers’ cuts could boost gasoline prices and help Russia
Major oil-producing countries led by Saudi Arabia said they’re cutting supplies of crude — again. This time, the decision was a surprise and is underlining worries about where the global economy might be headed.Russia is joining in by extending its own cuts for the rest of the year. In theory, less oil flowing to refineries should mean higher gasoline prices for drivers and could boost the inflation hitting the U.S. and Europe. And that may also help Russia weather Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine at the expense of the U.S.The decision by oil producers, many of them in the OPEC oil cartel, to cut production by more than 1 million barrels a day comes after prices for international benchmark crude slumped amid a slowing global economy that needs less fuel for travel and industry. Wimbledon drops ban on Russian and Belarusian players
Wimbledon has lifted a ban on Russian and Belarusian tennis players from competing at this summer’s championships, with the All England Club admitting it has been forced into an “incredibly difficult decision”.Players from the two countries will be asked to sign declarations of neutrality and have been told they must not support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine if they are to compete. The club’s decision sees Wimbledon fall back in line with the rest of the sport, where players from Russia and Belarus have been allowed to compete under neutral flags since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russia ‘very far’ from capturing Bakhmut - Ukraine
Ukraine said on Monday that Russian forces were "very far" from capturing the eastern town of Bakhmut and that fighting raged on around the administration building where the Wagner mercenary group claimed to have raised the Russian flag.A spokesperson for Ukraine's eastern military command told Reuters that it was unclear where Russian forces had raised their flag and that they had falsely claimed to have captured the city."They raised the flag over some kind of toilet. They attached it to the side of who knows what, hung their rag and said they had captured the city. Well good, let them think they've taken it," the official, Serhiy Cherevatyi, said by telephone.Bakhmut has been the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the war, now in its second year, with huge casualties on both sides and much of the eastern city destroyed by bombardments. Von der Leyen, Macron to meet in Paris ahead of China trip
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron for a working lunch on Monday, said the commission, as the two prepare for a joint trip to China later in the week.Commission chief spokesperson Eric Mamer said in a tweet that the two leaders will discuss issues including Russia’s war on Ukraine, the energy sector and preparations for their trips to China, including their joint meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.Ahead of her visit to China this week with Macron, von der Leyen delivered a sober assessment of Chinese policies, saying China was becoming more repressive at home and more assertive abroad, replacing an era of reform and opening with one of security and control, where companies in China were required to assist state intelligence-gathering operations. Woman named in media put on wanted listed after blogger killed
Russia’s interior ministry on Monday placed a woman Russian media have described as a suspect in the killing of war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky on its wanted list, the Interfax news agency reported.Vladlen Tatarsky, whose real name was Maxim Fomin, was killed in a bomb blast at a cafe in St Petersburg on Sunday.A woman called Darya Trepova was identified by some Russian media as a suspect online, though the interior ministry made no reference to the Tatarsky killing on its site which showed she had been put on its wanted list.Fomin, who had 560,000 followers on the messaging app Telegram, was one of the most prominent of Russia’s war bloggers - a mixed group of war veterans and correspondents who have championed Russia’s campaign in Ukraine, while also offering stinging criticism of the Russian military leadership. Wagner’s Prigozhin says Russian flag raised in Bakhmut as Zelensky calls fight ‘particularly hot'
Volodymyr Zelensky has called the military situation was “particularly hot” around Bakhmut last night, with no letup in a months-long drive to seize the city, the most protracted battle in the Russian invasion. On the other hand, the founder of Russia‘s Wagner mercenary force, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said his troops had raised a Russian flag on the administrative building in the city. But there was no indication from Ukrainian officials or military commands that Bakhmut had fallen into Russian hands.
