Former Alabama Star Becoming Popular NFL Trade Target cover image

This former Alabama Crimson Tide star could be on the move this NFL offseason.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide star Mac Jones has certainly not experienced a whole lot of success on the NFL level, but things could be changing for the perplexing quarterback.

Jones flamed out with the New England Patriots and struggled during his lone campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he looks rejuvenated with the San Francisco 49ers in 2025.

The 27-year-old has played in nine games while making eight starts in place of the injured Brock Purdy, who just returned this past Sunday. During his time on the field this season, Jones has thrown for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 69.6 percent of his passes and posting a 97.4 passer rating. The 49ers also went 5-3 in his starts.

Jones is under contract with San Francisco through the end of next season, but it's looking more and more like the Alabama product will not make it through the end of his deal.

Why? Because Jones is widely viewed as a top trade candidate heading into the NFL offseason, and apparently, the Niners could bag some rather significant draft capital in return for him.

There are plenty of quarterback-needy teams around the NFL, and while Jones certainly wouldn't be a fit everywhere (it's hard to imagine him with the New York Jets, for example), there may be some potential destinations where he could succeed.

Jones spent three years with the Crimson Tide between 2018 and 2020. During his final season at Tuscaloosa, he threw for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 77.4 percent of his passes, finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting.

The Jacksonville, Fl. native actually made the Pro Bowl during his rookie campaign with the Patriots, but then endured two dreadful seasons before being benched in 2023. He was dealt to the Jaguars that ensuing offseason, who allowed him to walk via free agency after one year.

Is there still a chance that Jones finds success as a starter somewhere in the NFL? Perhaps. He has displayed this year that he has obvious talent, although it's also possible that he is merely a product of Kyle Shanahan's system in San Francisco.

We'll see what becomes of Jones in the spring.
