Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron knows what it takes to thrive under center for the Crimson Tide, and recently, he had high praise for current signal-caller Ty Simpson’s growth and development.

On a recent episode of The Dynasty Bama  podcast, former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron was quick to not only defend, but also praise, Ty Simpson for his transformation and game play since the season opener loss to Florida State.

“I’ve thought for a long time the kids a baller. And it’s funny how many fans wanted to know get on Ty And say the first game … “he didn’t play great... It was his fault"… blah blah blah. A lot of crickets out there right now. And I said be patient with him. He’s gonna be fine. The last two weeks I think it’s proven it. Have they played the top competition? No. Are turnovers going to happen throughout the season? Yes. You can see the kid can make every throw that’s needed on the field. Yeah he does a good job of using his feet when a play breaks down. He’s able to extend plays. Biggest thing is him being smart when he does extend plays. Don’t make a bad play worse. But listen, I’m proud of Ty. I think he’s done a hell of a job and he never lost a supporter on this side. Some of the others watching the show have to jump back on the bandwagon, cause they they were quick to jump off."

McCarron’s comments highlight not only Simpson’s growth but also the unrealistic expectations often placed on young quarterbacks at Alabama. Playing under the brightest lights in college football means that every mistake is magnified, and criticism comes quickly.

When you look at the last 2 games for Simpson, he has really proven himself.

Against ULM, Simpson went 17/17 for 226 yards and 3 TDs. And Simpson didn't even play the entire game. Last week against Wisconsin, Simpson had another electric performance going 24/29 for 382 yards and 4 TDs.

Simpson’s improvement has been so dramatic that his name is now starting to surface in early Heisman Trophy conversations. What once seemed like a long shot has quickly become a legitimate discussion point, as his efficiency, accuracy, and playmaking ability have been incredible to witness.

And when you look at how this season started for the Crimson Tide, what once appeared to be a hopeless season, has turned into the complete opposite. Alabama suddenly finds itself with new life and a new leader under center.

Next week’s showdown against Georgia in Athens will be the biggest test of the season, and perhaps the defining moment for Ty Simpson. If Simpson and the Tide can pull off a win on the road against the Bulldogs, not only will Alabama reestablish itself as a true playoff contender, but Simpson will firmly plant himself in the national spotlight as one of the nation's elite quarterbacks.
