The Atlanta Braves re-signed Raisel Iglesias on Wednesday night, but the Jays did make some overtures.

The Atlanta Braves re-signed closer Raisel Iglesias to a one-year, $16 million deal on Wednesday, though the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly had interest in adding him to their bullpen.

According to Cuban baseball insider Francys Romero, the Blue Jays and Dodgers had interest, but the Blue Jays never made an official offer.

Despite the Jays never making an offer, we can learn a few things from their pursuit. Let's take a little deeper look on Iglesias at first, as that will come in handy in a moment.

    The Iglesias file

Now 35-years-old, Iglesias will turn 36 in January. An 11-year veteran of the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels and Atlanta Braves, he's gone 42-55 lifetime with a 2.90 ERA. He has 253 career saves, including eight seasons of double-digit saves or more. He has five seasons of 30 or more, serving as one of the more reliable relievers of the last decade.

However, he showed some signs of cracking this season, pitching to a 3.21 ERA in 70 games.

On that note, Iglesias has shown solid durability in his career. He's made 58 appearances or more in each of the last five seasons. He also appeared in 63 games or more in each season from 2017-19, only stopping that streak because of the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.

The Jays are looking to upgrade the right places

We've seen a lot of speculation about the Jays and Kyle Tucker, and we've heard about the Jays and Cody Bellinger. In addition, they've been linked to Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette. But while the national focus has been on offense, it's nice to see the Jays addressing areas that truly need addressing.

Though Toronto got to Game 7 of the World Series, the bullpen was the weakest part of the roster in October, and now Seranthony Dominguez is a free agent as well.

Toronto could use another power arm to pair with Jeff Hoffman at the back-end of games. Maybe that's a closer who pushes Hoffman to the eighth inning, or maybe it's a guy like Iglesias, who could have set him up, but Toronto needs someone to help with a key late-inning role.

    Help won't come cheap

Iglesias is about to be 36. He's got a lot of tread on that arm, and he pitched worse in 2025. And he still got $16 million.

If you're a Jays fan hoping for solid relief help at affordable prices, it doesn't appear to be out there. If you want Edwin Diaz, is going to cost you. If you want anyone, it's going to cost you.
