If Marcus Semien is going to play second base in New York, that has to mean that Bo Bichette is not an option for New York, right?

On Sunday night, the New York Mets and Texas Rangers completed a shocking trade which could have a profound impact on the Toronto Blue Jays moving forward through the rest of the offseason.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN on social media:

BREAKING: The New York Mets and Texas Rangers are finalizing a trade that would send second baseman Marcus Semien to the Mets and outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers, sources tell ESPN

How does this impact the Jays?

Well, for starters, the Mets figure to use Semien as their primary second baseman moving forward. Assuming that's the case, they shouldn't be in the running for free agent Bo Bichette, who the Blue Jays would like to bring back. Though Bichette has always been a shortstop, some teams want to move him to second base. The Mets could have been one of those teams since they have Francisco Lindor at short.

    1) If the Mets are not interested in Bichette, that's just one less team to compete with, which is always good.

    2) The Mets have the biggest budget in baseball, arguably, and if they are not truly in the Bichette sweepstakes, that can only be a good thing for Toronto as well.

    3) The Boston Red Sox could still be a match for Bichette, as could the New York Yankees, to a degree, so there's definitely big market competition, but not having the Mets is a good thing.

    4) With regards to Texas, they are taking on $100-ish million in salary for Nimmo, so they also aren't likely to backfill their newfound second base need with Bichette, which is also good for the Jays.

    The Bichette file

Now 27 years old, Bichette is one of the youngest free agents to hit the market over the last several years. He hit .311 this past season as the Jays won the American League East, also hitting 18 home runs and driving in 94.

He's a two-time All-Star who is a career .294 hitter. If the Jays are to re-sign him, he'd pair with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander in the middle of Toronto's order, giving them one of the best trios in the American League. Don't forget George Springer, Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk.

Bichette has led the American League in hits twice in his career and was on track to again this season before suffering a left knee sprain in early September. He returned in the World Series.

    Up next

The baseball world will reconvene at the winter meetings in Orlando from Dec. 7-10. It's at that time that we could see some serious transactions occur, potentially including Bichette. He's expected to get a five-to-seven year deal worth at least $150-200 million.
