With Devin Williams signing a three-year deal with the New York Mets on Monday night, we examined the possibility on Tuesday of the Toronto Blue Jays swooping into sign free agent reliever Edwin Diaz.
And while the odds look better after New York added Williams, the Mets are reportedly exploring the idea of signing them both.
As we've heard all offseason, the Jays have their eyes and ears open to other reliever possibilities, including Pete Fairbanks, who had his team option declined by the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in the offseason.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network says on Tuesday that the Blue Jays, Marlins and Tigers are all interested in Fairbanks, and he adds that he could sign before the Winter Meetings, which kick off on Dec. 7.
Now 31, Fairbanks will turn 32 later in December. A seven-year veteran of the Texas Rangers and Rays, he's gone 20-24 in his career with a 3.19 ERA. He helped the Rays advance to the World Series in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and has amassed 23 saves or more in each of the last three seasons.
He had a 2.83 ERA in 2025 with 27 saves in 60.1 innings. He's one of the top relief arms on the market and is becoming more desirable with options like Willians and Ryan Helsley (Orioles) off the market.
If the Jays were to sign Fairbanks, how would they view him within the confines of their bullpen? Would they see him as the closer and supplant Jeff Hoffman, who did the job in 2025? Or would they want to use Hoffman in the ninth and Fairbanks in the eighth?
How does he view himself? And what is he looking for out of his next deal?
If he's looking for the most money, then going to a place where he'd be the clear closer is presumably a priority. If he's looking for the best chance to win, then you can't find a better spot than Toronto right now, who came within just minutes of winning the World Series.
In addition to Diaz and Fairbanks, other prominent relievers on the market include Robert Suarez, Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan, Luke Weaver, Tyler Rogers and Seranthony Dominguez, who pitched for the Jays after the trade deadline this season. He is now a free agent.
