The Atlanta Braves were dealt an unfortunate update on Sunday, when it was revealed that shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will miss four-to-five months with a hand injury. On Monday, the Braves made an addition to help soften the blow of Kim's injury. Atlanta announced the signing of infielder Jorge Mateo to a one-year contract.
Mateo, 30, played 42 games in 2025 with the Baltimore Orioles, hitting .177/.217/.266. While his numbers are obviously far from ideal, Mateo is a versatile player who can provide necessary depth. He is capable of stealing bases at a high rate as well, as he swiped at least 32 bags in both 2022 and 2023.
Mateo can play either middle infield positions while also helping out in the outfield if necessary. Ozzie Albies is the Braves second baseman at the moment, but Mateo can help fill in at shortstop this season. Additionally, he can play second if Albies needs a day off.
Kim's injury leaves the Braves in an uncertain situation when it comes to their shortstop position. Mauricio Dubon can help fill in at shortstop in addition to Mateo. Eli White is also a candidate to receive playing time. However, one has to wonder if Atlanta will consider making a more notable splash.
Kim likely is not going to return until May or June at the earliest. Given the news, Harold Reynolds of MLB Network suggested that Atlanta should consider trading for Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams.
It isn't clear if the Nationals are willing to move Abrams. They may be especially hesitant to trade him to a division rival. Reynolds acknowledged that the deal may not come to fruition, but he believes the Braves should at least reach out and inquire about the possibility of a trade.
Whether it ends up being Abrams or someone else, acquiring another shortstop could be something Atlanta attempts to do before the 2026 season. Dubon and Mateo will be capable of holding down the position for the first couple months of the '26 campaign, but bringing in a more reliable overall option at the position may be the best move for the ball club. Both Dubon and Mateo are better candidates for versatile/utility roles.
With that being said, it remains to be seen if Atlanta has serious interest in making a potential trade. It will be something to monitor as spring training draws near.
