The Dallas Cowboys have a monumental task in front of them this Sunday when old friend Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers roll into town. As we’ve discussed though, the Packers offensive line might be a surprising weakness that the Cowboys can take advantage of.
Well, it seems that that weakness is going to be even more pronounced than previously expected, as Adam Schefter is reporting that starting right tackle Zach Tom is expected to be out on Sunday.
This actually isn’t the first time that the Packers will be without Tom this season. In fact, they’ve had to make due in his absence more often than not.
After receiving a four year, $88 million dollar extension this offseason, he’s only played 34 snaps in three games this year. After suffering a hip injury in the opener and leaving that game, he sat out of their Week 2 win against the Commanders.
He was cleared to play in Week 3 but left after one snap to an oblique injury. Green Bay’s offensive line has been up and down without him.
After playing superbly against Washington, they struggled against a talented defensive line in Cleveland. So much so, that the Packers' five lowest PFF grades on offense were their five main offensive lineman.
Looking ahead to Week 4, its not entirely clear who will be lining up at right tackle against Dallas. In Week 2, rookie second rounder Anthony Belton filled in admirably, recording a 61.9 PFF grade in his first game as a starter.
Against Clevleand, it was more of a committee with Belton logging 31 snaps at the position and Jordan Morgan getting 30. Neither performed well as Belton was credited with a 41.6 grade compared to Morgan’s 40.7.
While the Cowboys' pass rush has ranged from anemic to uninspiring, there is reason to hope that they’ll perform better this week. Osa Odighizuwa has been above average to good this season with a hard-earned 77.5 overall grade, while Jadeveon Clowney is in line to make his team debut this week.
Dallas still has a tough task. Yes, the Packers offensive line struggled against an elite Browns pass rush last week, but they looked very good when playing a Washington front with a talent level more in line with the Cowboys.
With that said, you never say never in the NFL. And, if Dallas is to pull off the upset, taking advantage of Tom’s absence will be key to doing so.
