The Dallas Cowboys did not have the season that they might have wanted in 2025, but that does not mean that their year was without its bright spots.
Perhaps the biggest surprise from the season was the superstar play from wide receiver George Pickens, who Dallas got in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers this past offseason.
But there is a silver lining, as the 24-year-old wideout is set to become an unrestricted free agent once the offseason hits. The Cowboys will do all they can to keep their new star, but it would be good to have a plan in place if they cannot do that.
Brian Martin of Blogging the Boys recently put out a piece going over the guys who could be on Dallas' free agent wish list. And the second guy that he lists is Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Alec Pierce.
"Alec Pierce would be a great consolation prize if the Cowboys are unable to retain George Pickens for whatever reason," Martin writes. "He’s one of the best deep threats in the entire league whose production will likely improved with better QB play, unlike the carousel he’s had to deal with during his time with the Colts."
Pickens had over 1,400 yards this season for a new career high, which would be hard to live up to for any new receiver the team gets. (And as our Mike Fisher has reported repeatedly, Dallas has no intention of letting him go.)
But Pierce has the talent to be a Plan B.
The 2022 second-round pick has led the league in yards per reception each of the past two years, and he has done so with something less than great QBs play. While Daniel Jones was playing very solid before he got injured, it's hard to say that Pierce would not be better off with a field general like Dak Prescott who is an established star in this league.
Pierce finished this season with 1,000 yards and six touchdowns, and he did so with just 47 receptions. This goes to show just how good of a deep threat he is, and that could be something the Cowboys could take interest in.
Dallas already has one of the best receivers in the league in CeeDee Lamb, and going and getting a guy like Pierce who could use an opportunity could be something for the team to think about.
