The Dallas Cowboys squandered much of the good will they recently built in their Week 8 44-24 thumping at the hands (hooves?) of the Denver Broncos. With that said, there were still some positives in the team's worse offensive outing of the season.
Let’s take a look at the top two performers on that side of the ball according to PFF, as well as which player struggled the most. Each player mentioned played a minimum of 25 snaps.
For the second week in a row, the player who had the worst offensive grade the previous game bounces back to have the best. After struggling to a career-worst 49.9 grade in his return from injury in Week 7, Booker posted a career-best mark, buoyed by an 86.3 run blocking grade.
While his 60.9 pass blocking grade leaves much to be desired, it’s actually his third best of the season. His one pressure allowed was also a career-best.
If he can have a pass blocking floor right around here while continuing to post elite run blocking numbers, the team will surely take that. After all, players with long careers aren’t necessarily the ones that are great at everything; they’re often the ones that aren’t bad at anything.
Known primarily for his blocking, Schoonmaker once again excelled in that area, posting a 72.2 pass blocking and 65.8 run blocking grade. By posting a season-high two catches for 25 yards though, he showed that he can’t be totally dismissed as a pass catcher either.
And while those modest numbers and 74.5 receiving grade are hardly eye-catching, they’ll force the opposing defense to at least consider him in coverage when he’s on the field. That extra half second of thought could be the difference between staying ahead of the chains and falling behind them on a drive.
Schoonmaker will always have a place on the field due to his elite blocking for his position. But, if he can continue to at least threaten as a pass catcher, his role could continue to grow.
By recording one drop and one catch for -2 yards on three targets, Turpin had by far the worst game of his season. While his primary value will always come as a kick returner, he gave hope that he could develop into an impact pass catcher as well after posting at least 30 yards through the air in the three games leading up to his two-week absence.
But, he seems to be taking steps back in that regard, posting a total of two for 15 yards in the games since his return. While his role as a returner is more than safe, it may be time to let Ryan Flournoy have a sustained chance at taking over the role Turpin has failed to take ahold of in the offense.
