By Eli Gershzon, Crypto Expert, March 2025 Why M2 Money Supply Is the Key to Bitcoin’s Future Bitcoin is more than just a cryptocurrency; it’s a barometer of global liquidity. If you’re trying to predict where Bitcoin is headed, you need to watch one critical factor: M2 money supply. What is M2 Money Supply? In simple terms, M2 is the total amount of liquid money in an economy. It includes: Cash and coins (physical money) Checking accounts (money available instantly) Savings accounts and short-term deposits (money that can be accessed quickly) Money market funds (liquid financial assets) M2 reflects how much money is circulating in the system. If M2 expands, people and institutions have more money to invest, which drives up asset prices—including Bitcoin. If M2 contracts, liquidity dries up, making it harder for markets to sustain growth. Bitcoin and M2: A Historical Connection Bitcoin has historically followed M2 trends with a 12-week lag. When M2 rises, Bitcoin tends to rally. When M2 contracts, Bitcoin struggles. For example, in 2020-2021, central banks pumped trillions into the economy, expanding M2. Bitcoin skyrocketed to $69,000. But in 2022, as the U.S. Federal Reserve tightened liquidity, Bitcoin crashed to $15,000. From late 2023 to early 2025, global M2 declined again—and Bitcoin followed. The big question now is: Have we reached a turning point? Current M2 Trends: A Shift Is Coming 1. Central Banks Are Rethinking Tightening After months of aggressive interest rate hikes, central banks are pausing or reversing course: The Federal Reserve has hinted at possible rate cuts later in 2025. The European Central Bank is considering loosening monetary policy. China has already begun injecting liquidity to support its struggling economy. 2. Global Liquidity May Be on the Rise Recent data suggests M2 is stabilizing. If central banks shift toward easier monetary policies, Bitcoin could see a renewed uptrend in the second half of 2025. Geopolitical Events: Fueling Bitcoin’s Volatility Beyond central bank policies, geopolitical uncertainty is another force shaping Bitcoin’s trajectory. Middle East: Escalating Conflicts and Economic Reactions Tensions are rising in the Middle East, adding market volatility: Israel-Hamas War: The conflict has intensified, and the humanitarian crisis is worsening. Lebanon & Hezbollah: Clashes along the Israel-Lebanon border are raising fears of a broader war. Iran’s Influence: The U.S. has accused Iran of supporting regional instability, leading to increased military strikes. U.S. Military Action in Yemen and Iran Yemen Strikes: The U.S. recently launched airstrikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen, responding to attacks on Red Sea shipping routes. Iran on High Alert: There are reports that the U.S. is planning more aggressive action against Iran. If this happens, it could trigger a massive market reaction. How does this affect Bitcoin? Investors seek safety during uncertainty. Traditionally, gold benefits from geopolitical crises, but Bitcoin has emerged as a digital alternative. If global tensions escalate, Bitcoin could see increased demand as a hedge. Eli Gershzon’s Final Take "Bitcoin’s future is tied to global liquidity. The signs point to an M2 stabilization, which could fuel Bitcoin’s next leg up. However, investors should stay cautious—geopolitical tensions, inflation, and central bank policies will all play a role. The second half of 2025 will be decisive in determining whether Bitcoin can sustain a move above $100,000 or face another consolidation period. Either way, Bitcoin remains the hardest asset in a world of uncertain fiat money policies." Sources: 1.
