The Los Angeles Dodgers spend like no other in a sport with no salary cap, which makes what Dave Roberts recently said very interesting.

For many baseball fans, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been the envy, and villains, of the Majors. With consecutive World Series titles and a massive pay roll in tow, the Dodgers possess the strongest roster, leading to resentment and the desire for guard rails on what teams in MLB are allowed to spend.

This is why when Dodgers manager Dave Roberts recently stated his support for a salary cap, it came as a surprise.

“You know what? I'm all right with (a salary cap)," Roberts said during an appearance on Amazon Prime's "Good Sports." "I think the NBA has done a nice job of revenue sharing with the players and the owners. But if you're going to kind of suppress spending at the top, I think that you got to raise the floor to make those bottom-feeders spend money too."

During day two of the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Roberts revisited his comments.

“Here's the thing,” he told reporters. “I'm entitled to an opinion, as we all are. And so, I think that that's one man's opinion. And fortunately, unfortunately, I don't have a vote. And so, I still think the game is in a great spot and everyone's winning. It's the greatest game and it's a lot of fun.”

“So, for me, I'm focused on 2026, but I was asked a question and I answered it honestly. But again, my opinion shouldn't move the needle. So, there's people that are you know, are going to have those conversations. But for me, I love where the game is at. I love the game of baseball.

With a total payroll of nearly $246 million, the Dodgers sit atop Major League Baseball in spending. Los Angeles also had five All-Stars last season, which tied the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners for the most by a team behind the Detroit Tigers (6). The lineup the front office has constructed is comprised of future hall-of-famers, and the organization is not afraid to pay to be the best.

Roberts is also unconcerned about his players looking at him differently for his stance.

“Each player knows how much I care about them, their well-being. So that would never, I'm not concerned with that at all.”
