Could the Philadelphia Eagles give QB Jalen Hurts an extension?
NFL senior reporter Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports thinks the Philadelphia Eagles could sign QB Jalen Hurts to an extension this offseason.
It's a bold prediction considering Hurts hasn't played well this season.
"With all of that in mind, I don't see Howie Roseman risking going back into a quarterback abyss just because there are problems right now with both Hurts and the Eagles' offense," Robinson wrote. "If anything, it’s more likely Roseman would work another extension with Hurts that could create some more salary cap space rather than trading him and throwing a grenade into his current cap table."
Some people around the NFL believe the Eagles need to bench Hurts, who turned the ball over five times against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14 on Monday Night Football.
Philly head coach Nick Sirianni thinks the people are "ridiculous."
"No, I think that's ridiculous," he said during his weekly radio appearance on 94 WIP in Philadelphia on Wednesday. "I know every time I go out on that field with Jalen Hurts as our quarterback, we have a chance to win the game. That's something that's been proven. We've won a lot of football games.
"This is the most ultimate team game. You win together as a team, you lose together as a team. It's never just one thing."
Hurts went 21-40 through the air for 240 yards, zero touchdowns and four interceptions against the Chargers.
The Eagles lost in overtime, dropping to 8-5 on the season.
"I didn't play well enough. Too many turnovers," Hurts said. "Lots of opportunities, especially when we get on the other side of the 50 and I wasn't able to get us in the box."
Hurts turned the ball over twice on the same play in the second quarter. He was picked off, but then the Chargers fumbled the ball on the return and Hurts picked the ball up before fumbling it himself.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Hurts is the first player to commit two turnovers on the same play dating back to 1978, which is as far back as its research goes.
"It definitely stings," Hurts said. "But how do you respond? That's the only way I know how to look at it. You're going to see what type of resolve does this team have ... what's in us to respond the way we want to. We've just got to dig."
The Eagles are still in first place in the NFC East, but they don't look like a Super Bowl contender. The defending champions have lost three games in a row and their starting QB looks lost out there.
Hurts has 2,754 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, six interceptions, 337 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on the season. He's completing 64.7% of his passes.
If the Eagles give Hurts an extension this offseason, many fans in Philly won't be happy unless the QB turns things around this season and leads the team to another Super Bowl.
