Current Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Sam Howell has been around the league. Starting his career with the Washington Commanders, he eventually landed with the Seattle Seahawks.
He's now with the Eagles, but isn't expected to see much action on the field, barring anything drastic happening.
He was also a member of the Minnesota Vikings, but was released earlier in the year.
Despite that, Cem Yolbulan believes that the Vikings could give Howell another opportunity to play in the NFL.
With J.J. McCarthy playing well against the Detroit Lions, it might not be the best idea anymore, but the Vikings are also a bit banged up at the quarterback position. Additionally, considering McCarthy's injury history, they could utilize the serviceable backup.
“The Vikings already traded for Howell earlier this year, so there is reason to think that they would be willing to bring him back. At the time of the 2025 NFL draft, the Vikings traded for Howell from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a swap of their fifth-round picks. Howell was not needed in Seattle with Sam Darnold, Drew Lock, and rookie Jalen Milroe in the building. Despite trading for the 25-year-old, however, Minnesota opted to sign Wentz over him two weeks before the start of the season.
“Perhaps the reason was purely about the return. The Vikings didn't want to miss the opportunity to land a QB with some value around the league for a cheap price, and when they received an even better one from the Eagles, they went ahead and moved on from Howell,” he wrote.
There was a point where Howell looked to be a decent starter in the NFL, especially during the 2023 season when he threw for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns.
However, in that same season, he threw 21 interceptions.
If he can find a way to keep the turnovers down, Howell should be in a much better position.
Despite that reality, at this point, the 25-year-old isn't much more than a backup or practice squad quarterback.
If the Eagles can get any value for him, even if it's a seventh-round pick, it's better than doing nothing.
