The Philadelphia Eagles' offense has been the talk of the town in Philadelphia. That conversation only intensified over the weekend after they failed to score a point in the second half against the Dallas Cowboys, a squad with one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
It's tough to pinpoint an exact reason as to why the Eagles' offense has been playing so poorly, but there are a few different factors to consider.
For me, as I continue to say, a lot of this stems from Saquon Barkley not running the football at a high level. I understand the argument that Jalen Hurts needs to do a better job, but Barkley ultimately needs to find his way. If he doesn’t, I’d be surprised to see the Eagles accomplish what they’re hoping to this season.
Regarding what others are saying, Eagles all-time great Nick Foles gave his opinion on Philadelphia’s struggles. Speaking on a podcast, he said he doesn’t believe they’re doing enough to get their wide receivers open.
“Creativity is key as a play caller, and calling the plays at the right time ... is just an art,” he said, per NJ.com. “I don’t think anyone sees it. Fans that are passionate Eagles fans — because I’ve been to Philly several times — and you hear, every time I run across Philly fans, ’Man, what do you think is going to happen with the offense? What’s going on? Is this Jalen?’ I’m like, ‘Listen, it’s a team thing. Kevin Patullo is probably a great dude, a great coach, but there’s an art to play-calling that not everyone has and it’s not showing up this year. They’re in more of a trajectory of the 2023 season.”
Foles isn’t the first to suggest that the Eagles' offense isn’t doing enough to get their wide receivers open. Chad Johnson made similar comments.
Ultimately, some of that can be blamed on the schemes, but it’s also up to the players to execute.
This season, Eagles players simply haven’t done that.
There's still time to figure that out, so that's why I'm not too worried about it just yet.
