The San Francisco Giants are eager to exercise their No. 4 pick in the MLB Draft. Meanwhile, president of baseball operations Buster Posey knows other aspects of the offseason take patience.

Despite not making any substantial moves during the Winter Meetings, the San Francisco Giants still managed to strike gold by landing the fourth pick in the MLB Draft Lottery.

The Giants were in line to get the 15th pick because of their 81-81 record last season, which made moving up in the lottery that much better.

“I mean, it's huge,” Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey told Giants Talk. “A little bit of good fortune.”

“You never know. I mean, it could change the trajectory of a team for 10 plus years or more. So, you know, now the fun part starts debating kind of who we think might fall into that or not fall but be there when we pick fourth.”

The Giants have witnessed great success from their top 5 picks over the years, which have included players such as Posey (2008), Matt Williams (1986) and Will Clark (1985).

“Watching Michael Holmes, our scouting director, walk around these last 24 hours; he's got a little extra pep in his step,” Posey added. “So, it'll be fun to, you know, you're hoping when you pick right there, you find an impact player that can help you win a lot of games at the big-league level for a long time.”

While the Giants did not make any substantial moves in free agency or on the trade market during the Winter Meetings, Posey made it clear it was not because the front office is being idle.

“You know, for us last year, we signed [Willy] Adames right before the Winter Meetings and knew that was probably going to be our big move. It's quiet as far as news; it’s certainly not quiet on the suite.”

There's a lot of different ideas being thrown around amongst ourselves and then with other teams. I learned last year that you think you might have something and you don't, maybe you think you have something again and you don't; a lot of times you don't. So that's kind of the way things are.”

Posey understands that offseason moves take patience, and he has committed to that mentality.

“I think I just understand that's part of it. So, I wouldn’t say it’s hard. I mean, I think everybody would tell you that you wish you could sign and trade for every player that you want, but the reality is that's just not going to happen.”

“I mean, I had to be patient as a player when I was 0-for-15 and wanting to try to find a way to get some sleep at night. So, it's part of it.”
