The San Francisco Giants made a clear statement about their priorities this offseason, with MLB Network analysts highlighting the club’s signing of outfielder Harrison Bader as a strong defensive and roster fit.
The move immediately stabilizes an outfield that struggled defensively at times last season while also injecting athleticism and energy into the Giants’ lineup.
Bader, widely regarded as one of the premier defensive center fielders in baseball, is expected to take over duties in center field.
MLB Network noted that the alignment allows Jung Hoo Lee to shift into right field, a position many believe better suits his defensive profile. The adjustment improves San Francisco’s overall outfield defense and provides more balance across all three spots.
While Bader’s glove has long been his defining trait, his offensive production in 2025 showed meaningful growth.
After beginning the season with Minnesota, Bader was traded to Philadelphia, where he delivered a strong second half.
He finished the year with career highs in multiple offensive categories, including a .277 batting average and 17 home runs, production that stands out for a defense-first center fielder.
MLB Network analysts emphasized that even if Bader does not fully replicate those offensive numbers, his defensive impact alone makes him a major upgrade.
His speed, range, and instincts in center field consistently save runs, and his energy level is viewed as a positive addition to the clubhouse. At the plate, Bader is considered a reliable, competitive at-bat rather than an automatic out.
Bader’s postseason experience was also highlighted during the MLB Network discussion. Though he has moved between teams in recent seasons on shorter deals, he has shown an ability to elevate his play in high-leverage situations, something the Giants value as they push to return to playoff contention.
For Bader, the multi-year agreement provides stability after several one-year contracts.
For San Francisco, it represents a calculated move that strengthens defense, adds athleticism, and raises the team’s floor as it looks to compete in a crowded National League race.
