BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The bloom has come of the rose in the Darian DeVries era. For the first time since the college basketball season started five weeks ago, the Indiana Hoosiers and their first-year head coach are facing some adversity.
Now, let's see what they do about it.
After winning their first seven games against a soft-ish schedule, DeVries' Hoosiers suffered two bad losses last week, losing their Big Ten opener at Minnesota 73-64 on Wednesday night, and then losing 87-78 to No. 6 Louisville on Saturday in Indianapolis.
The get their December Big Ten game on Tuesday night, with a matchup against Penn State, a team that's off to an 8-1 start, but hasn't had any signature wins yet. According to kenpom.com, their nonconference strength of schedule ranks No. 355 nationally out of 365 teams, the lowest in the Big Ten. (Indiana is No. 260.)
Here's how to watch Tuesday night's game, with game times and TV information, plus the latest on the point spread:
Who: Penn State Nittany Lions (8-1, 0-0 in Big Ten) at Indiana Hoosiers (7-2, 0-1 in Big Ten)
What: Big Ten conference home opener for Indiana
When: Tuesday, Dec. 9, 8:30 p.m. ET
Where: Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, Bloomington, Ind.
TV: FOX Sports 1 — Kevin Kugler (play-by-play), Steve Smith (analyst)
Radio: IU Radio Network — Don Fischer (play-by-play), Errek Suhr (analyst), John Herrick
Point spread: Indiana is a 15.5-point favorite; the over/under is 153.5 points, according to the Fanduel.com gambling website.
Series history: Indiana leads the all-time series, 45-17. The Hoosiers have won three straight in the series, a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal game in 2024, and both regular season meetings a year ago under Mike Woodson. Indiana won 77-71 at the Palestra in Philadelphia on Jan. 5, 2025, and then again in Bloomington on on Feb. 26, winning 83-78.
DOING IT WITH DEFENSE: Indiana has put together some impressive numbers on the defensive end so far. Through nine games, they are No. 25 in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to Kenpom.com. The Hoosiers hold opponents to 43.9 percent effective field goal shooting — ranking No. 16 nationally — and opponents are shooting just 41.3 percent from inside the arc (6th nationally), and 32.8 percent from the three-point line. All nine opponents are scored under their season average in their game against Indiana.
SHOOTERS NEED TO GET GOING: Indiana's offense is at its best when their perimeter shooters are knocking down threes. That hasn't been the case lately, and they need to get it going again on Tuesday. They were just 19-for-61 from deep in the two losses, just 31.1 percent, and many of those came late when the outcome seemed obvious. Lamar Wilkerson was 15-for-26 — 57.7 percent — from three in the first three games, but he's been just 10-for-40 since then, a mere 25 percent. He needs to get rolling.
A PERCEPTION THING: Indiana fans were so ready for change this season that they embraced the coaching change and roster turnover. But two tough losses has the fan base back-pedaling a bit. So it would be a good thing to play well on Tuesday night and get back to their winning ways, especially with a big game at Kentucky looming on Saturday night.
HOOSIERS FALL OUT OF TOP-25: Indiana fell out of both the Associated Press and Coaches top-25 polls after two losses last week. Arizona and Michigan are the new No. 1s after Purdue's loss. Here are the complete polls, and this week's top-25 showdowns. READ MORE
INDIANA LOSES TO LOUISVILLE: Indiana fell into a 16-point hole in the first six-plus minutes against No. 6 Louisville on Saturday and could never recover, losing 87-78 in a neutral-site game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Tucker DeVries led the Hoosiers with 26 points. READ MORE
INDIANA LOSES AT MINNESOTA: The Indiana Hoosiers struggled down the stretch at Minnesota, surrendering an early lead and getting dominated on the boards in a surprising Big Ten opening loss to the Gophers. It wasn't the way the previously unbeaten Hoosiers wanted to start conference play. READ MORE
