Indiana has opened the season 5-0 under new coach Darian DeVries, and the start has been impressive enough that the Hoosiers are ranked in the Week 4 Associated Press top-25 college basketball poll.
The Hoosiers checked in at No. 25, their first ranking of the year in the AP poll. DeVries made a bit of history in getting ranked so early in his career. The last time an Indiana coach had a team ranked sooner was a young man named Bob Knight, who had his 1971-72 team ranked No. 12 in the Week 3 AP poll.
That was 54 years ago.
Here's where each coach since Knight was ranked in their first year as head coach of the Hoosiers:
* Mike Woodson (2021-22 season) — unranked all year.
* Archie Miller (2017-18 season) — unranked all year.
* Tom Crean (2008-09 season) — unranked all year.
* Kelvin Sampson (2006-07 season) — ranked No. 23 in Week 12.
* Mike Davis (2000-01 season) — No. 20 in Week 19
* Bob Knight (1971-72 season) — No. 12 in Week 3
Indiana has one impressive win this far, beating Marquette 100-73 in Chicago on Nov. 9. The others have come against low mid-major foes, Alabama A&M, Milwaukee, Incarnate Word and Lindenwood.
It gets tougher going forward now. The Hoosiers host 5-1 Kansas State from the Big 12 on Tuesday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. After a Saturday game with Bethune Cookman, they play at Minnesota on Dec. 3, play Louisville in Indianapolis on Dec. 6, host Penn State on Dec. 9 and then travel to Lexington to play Kentucky on Dec. 13.
