One of the top LSU Tigers head coaching candidates may be considered for the newest NFL job opening.

The LSU Tigers coaching search is ongoing behind the scenes, but one of their top targets could also now be in contention for an NFL job that opened up on Monday.

The New York Giants fired their head coach, Brian Daboll, on Monday following their 2-8 start. He was 21-41-1 during his time at the helm.

Now, current Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin is going to be thrown into the conversation for that job for several reasons.

Kiffin is a favorite choice among fans and journalists to fill the Tigers' job. Many also believe that LSU is the top destination in college, but the allure of the NFL could be a different level of competition.

It would not be the first time that Kiffin went to the NFL. He had a two-year stint with the Oakland Raiders back in 2007 and 2008, but it failed spectacularly as he led the team to a 5-15 record.

That could do two things to a coach. It could either give them the sign that they should stick to college or motivate them to prove that they can do it in the NFL. Nearly everything about Kiffin's personality would point to the latter.

This also isn't just trying a top college coach to an NFL team at random. Kiffin molded current Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart in college. He knows Dart can run his offense at a high level and the two seem to get along wonderfully.

A rebuilding team having a coach and quarterback duo in place would be hard for the front office to ignore.

The good news for the Tigers is that they could still very well beat whatever offer New York approaches Kiffin with. Brian Kelly was making over double what Daboll was making per year.

Kiffin's poor history in the NFL could give the Giants pause in making him essentially a top-10 paid coach in the league, to compete with an LSU team that could become desperate to land a top name.

The Tigers have had a couple other top names mentioned around their opening already essentially taken out of the conversation. Nick Saban was ruled out by new athletic director Verge Ausberry. Dan Lanning and Kenny Dillingham have already taken them out of job conversations.

There will still be plenty of names available for LSU to consider, but losing Kiffin would deal a massive blow to their search if they want a high-profile hire.
