The Mariners signed Patrick Wisdom, who will receive a non-roster invite to spring training

The Seattle Mariners bolstered their minor league ranks with an experienced bat on Jan. 7.

According to a report from Just Baseball's Aram Leighton, the Mariners have signed corner infielder Patrick Wisdom to a minor league contract with a non-roster spring invite attached.

Wisdom spent this past season in the Korean Baseball Organization with the Kia Tigers.

In his lone season overseas, Wisdom slashed .236/.321/.535 with an .856 OPS in 119 games. He hit 35 home runs with 85 RBIs.

Wisdom was first selected with the 52nd overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Saint Mary's (Calif.)

He played just 32 games with the Cardinals before he was dealt to the Texas Rangers on Dec. 11, 2018.

Wisdom elected free agency after the 2019 season and signed a minor league deal with Seattle Nov. 27, 2019. He didn't play a major league game for the organization and was designated for assignment Aug. 10, 2019, and released four days later.

Wisdom was signed by the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 23, 2020, where he enjoyed the most success of his major league career.

Wisdom spent five seasons with the Cubs from 2020-24. He had a slash line of .208/.290/.462 with a .752 OPS in 414 games. He hit 56 doubles, three triples and 84 home runs with 196 RBIs.

Wisdom's best individual season came in 2021. That year, Wisdom had a slash line of .231/.305/.518 with an .823 OPS in 106 games. He hit 13 doubles and a career-high 28 homers with 61 RBIs.

The Mariners have two major openings on the team: third base and first base.

Wisdom is capable of playing both first and third base but has registered most of his career at the latter. He's played 464.2 total innings at first base and 2,119.2 innings at third base. He's also posted over 100 career innings at both left and right field, respectively.

Currently, barring any additions between now and spring training, the hot corner will come down between Seattle's top prospect Colt Emerson or second-year player Ben Williamson.

The 34-year-old, right-handed hitter will likely be a platoon/pinch-hitter at best. But he is an experienced veteran with power that can potentially provide some coverage for Seattle at third base.

Between Wisdom in the minors, utility player Miles Mastrobuoni, first baseman/outfielder Luke Raley, first baseman/outfielder Rob Refnsyder and middle infielder Leo Rivas, the Mariners would have enough depth to provide coverage at almost every infielder position.
