My take on lowering CPM and tipping after-effects
Jun 30, 2023 3:57 PM
Hi guys, here's my take on lowering CPM and tipping after-effects. These updates are introduced to improve the quality of content and remove spammers from BBS, as well as discourage the mindset of people who see BBS as an earning platform or a work-from-home opportunity.

Here are a few benefits from these updates:
1. Quality content: We can all agree that the update has improved the quality of content from members. They are putting in more effort to create good content.
2. Decrease in fraud: After this update, the chances of fraud or earning something dishonestly have significantly decreased. It's no longer like a show similar to Money Heist π.
3. Decrease in spam: Members are now focusing on producing quality content to earn more tips, rather than spamming posts to gain more impressions.
However, there are some disadvantages to this update:
1. Engagement: Now, the main focus of members is to create good content, and there is less emphasis on engaging in conversations. Only a few members are actively participating in discussions within the communities.
2. Effects on average content creators: As I mentioned in a comment, every community is rewarding the best content creators. Consequently, most average users have already left the platform, and the remaining ones are considering leaving.
3. Mindset to earn money: The intention behind this update was to remove members who were solely focused on earning money. However, it seems that members' primary goal is still to receive tips. In my opinion, this mindset cannot be changed simply by providing monetary rewards.
Now, I have a few questions for you guys:
1. Do we need quality content or quality engagement? In my opinion, quality engagement is more important than well-written posts. Sometimes, a single informative line of content can initiate a healthy discussion, while a well-written post can be useless if there are no members willing to engage in the comments section. A worthless post with one good point is enough to generate a discussion. So, why wasn't tipping for comments introduced in this update?
2. Is BBS now a centralized platform? With everything being in the hands of community owners/mods, it may appear that way. We can claim that everything is on the chain, but the real question is, how many general people are actually going to look on the chain for something? I have limited knowledge about decentralized or mono-centralized platforms, so I'm asking for insights from the experts.
