On this week's episode of the New York Mets Roundtable podcast, the trio discusses the offseason rumors while the hot stove cools off.
First on the agenda is the rumors that were quickly shut down, and one that some fans may not have even heard of until the dust had already settled. Briefly, there was some discourse around outfielder Juan Soto and whether he'd move to first base. The 27-year-old has already been vocal about not playing first, which leads to a discussion among our crew on whether he should consider the move or stay put.
Next, Lucas Stackpole brings up a topic discussed on last week's podcast, which has seemingly picked up traction. Both Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker have yet to sign, and there is some steam picking up on both free agents signing with the Mets. Whether that idea comes to fruition or not, it's something Mets fans can hold onto while the offseason slows down.
All three of our hosts, however, talk about the importance of landing at least one of the two former Gold Glove winners. Most fans would agree that failure to land at least one of them would ultimately be a stain on Steve Cohen and David Stearns.
The trio discusses the troubling offseason thus far, which is unusual for New York. For the first offseason in years, many players chose to leave the Mets and many players were traded away -- leaving fans to wonder if the days of big spending are over.
Looking into some trade hypotheticals, the Mets and San Diego Padres have been linked to each other all offseason. Lucas brings up one of the larger proposals, which would send right-handers Mason Miller, Nick Pivetta and outfielder Ramon Laureano to New York in exchange for outfielder Carson Benge, right-hander Jonah Tong, outfielder A.J. Ewing and right-hander Will Watson being shipped to San Diego. Be sure to listen to the full podcast to hear what Lucas, Peter Pappalardo and Bob Houk had to say about that proposal.
Staying on the topic of mock trades, Lucas ends the show with the idea of trading Major League Baseball players for minor league talent that have an opportunity to blossom into stars in the majors -- debating if that should be something that the Mets should entertain with someone like Tong.
