Mets Sign Former Yankees, Red Sox Pitcher To Minor League Deal cover image

Mets bolster pitching depth with Nick Burdi, a former rival, signing him to a minor league contract after stints with the Yankees and Red Sox.

The New York Mets kicked things off with a surprising trade that sent Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien.

Nimmo spent his entire MLB career with the Mets after being drafted, but he now joins the Rangers in a unique one-for-one swap with Texas.

With all eyes on the Pete Alonso sweepstakes, the Mets made an under-the-radar signing on Tuesday. They agreed to a deal with pitcher Nick Burdi, according to Mike Mayer.

"Mets have signed right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi to a minor league deal. The 32-year-old threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings for the Red Sox this year and a 2.83 ERA in Triple-A."

Burdi's MLB debut came with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018. He has bounced around since, spending time at the major league level with the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

He had 12 appearances with the Yankees in 2024 and four with the Red Sox last season, but the 32-year-old is joining the Mets on a minor league deal.

Burdi also spent 2021 and 2022 in the Padres’ minor league system, so he has been around quite a bit.

At worst, this is a depth signing for the Mets and gives them another option in the minor leagues if there is an injury.
