Top-ranked Michigan State faces #3 Penn State in a high-stakes hockey showdown. Witness elite offenses and potentially game-deciding goaltending.

Michigan State Hockey Looks to Keep Rolling

The Spartans enjoyed a well-earned bye during Halloween weekend but are ready to get back to work — and back to Munn Ice Arena — this weekend.

Michigan State still holds the #1 ranking in the nation despite playing only six games so far, compared to #2 Michigan and #3 Penn State, who have both logged ten early-season contests.

Speaking of #3 Penn State, that’s exactly who the Spartans will face off against this weekend in East Lansing.

This series will be another major test for Michigan State, who previously knocked off then-#1 ranked Boston University a few weeks ago. That sweep, combined with a dominant trip to Northern Michigan and a well-timed week off, has the Spartans rolling into November with plenty of momentum — and hopefully some extra energy after a Halloween break that wasn’t too full of tomfoolery.

Both the Spartans and Nittany Lions bring elite offenses to the ice. Penn State ranks sixth in the nation, averaging 4.1 goals per game, while Michigan State sits tenth at 3.83 goals per game. Defensively, the Spartans hold the upper hand — ranking 9th nationally with just 1.83 goals allowed per game, compared to Penn State’s 2.6 (22nd).

Goaltending could be the deciding factor. Michigan State rides junior Trey Augustine, who has looked every bit like the best goaltender in college hockey. He’s 4-1 with a .923 save percentage, 1.78 GAA, and two shutouts. Freshman Melvin Strahl also impressed in his lone start, allowing just two goals with a .912 save percentage.

For Penn State, the net has been split between freshman Joshua Fleming (4-0, .939 SV%, 1.80 GAA, one shutout) and sophomore Kevin Reidler (5-1, .912 SV%, 3.00 GAA).

Since Penn State joined Division I in 2012–13, the two teams have met 50 times, with the Nittany Lions leading the series 22-20-8. Penn State has won two of the last three meetings — all of which went to a shootout — including a 3-2 win on February 22.

Both programs have climbed the national ladder this season, setting up what might be one of the best regular-season matchups in college hockey. Rankings won’t matter when the puck drops — this one promises intensity, skill, and probably a little extra hockey for good measure.
