“Who’s up for round two?!”
One of my favorite throwaway lines from Ice Age found its way back into my head this morning as the second signing period for high school football officially kicked off. Early bird gets the worm as Michigan State wasted no time.
The Spartans have officially landed 2026 four-star wide receiver Samson Gash.
A Detroit native, Gash starred at Catholic Central High School and enters the class ranked as the No. 7 wide receiver in Michigan and the No. 43 WR nationally according to 247Sports.
Athletic excellence runs deep in the Gash family.
His father, Sam Gash, played fullback at Penn State from 1987–1991 before enjoying a 12-year NFL career that included two Pro Bowls, two second-team All-Pro selections, and a Super Bowl championship with the 2000 Baltimore Ravens.
His mother, Alicia Gash, played volleyball at New Mexico. One brother, Elijah Gash, plays professional lacrosse. Another, Caleb Gash, is already a redshirt defensive back at Michigan State. And then there’s Gideon Gash, who exploded for 126 yards on just three catches in the Division 1 state championship game.
In that championship matchup, Samson Gash was held to just 25 receiving yards, but drew constant defensive attention as Catholic Central defeated Detroit Cass Tech to take home the hardware.
Gash had no shortage of elite offers — Penn State, his father’s alma mater; Alabama, where he admitted to getting goosebumps during his visit; and Michigan State, where family ties had already planted seeds. It was expected to be a tight race, but in the end, it was always the Green and White.
Gash enters the class as the third-highest-rated commit, joining newly signed quarterback Kayd Coffman (No. 9 player in Michigan) and offensive tackle Collin Campbell, a top-five OT from Arizona. The potential Coffman-to-Gash connection could become a foundational pairing for the Fitzgerald era.
And the speed? It’s real.
Gash owns a verified 10.41 100-meter dash, a Michigan state record, making him quite literally the fastest player in Michigan high school sports. And now, he’s bringing that speed to East Lansing.
Notably, Gash attended the Michigan vs. Michigan State game on Friday, sitting right next to new head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Gash has been at the top of Fitzgerald’s to-do list ever since he arrived in East Lansing. While Gash had previously committed to MSU, he reopened his recruitment following Jonathan Smith’s departure before ultimately reaffirming his pledge under Fitzgerald.
Today, he officially puts pen to paper during National Signing Day.
On the field, Gash was electric. As a senior, he recorded 60 catches for 1,010 yards and 14 touchdowns, added 11 carries for 100 yards and a score, and totaled 475 punt return yards with three return touchdowns, helping Catholic Central finish atop the state. As a junior in 2024, he posted 42 catches for 731 yards and 12 touchdowns, rushed for 347 yards and eight scores, and added a kickoff-return touchdown while leading Catholic Central to the Division 1 semifinals.
Gash is a massive addition to a newly revamped Michigan State roster. The wide receiver room needed reinforcements, and few players bring the immediate game-breaking speed and pedigree that Samson Gash does.
Welcome to East Lansing.
Now let’s shock the world.
