Cam Edwards and Trent Fraley Commit to Michigan State cover image

Michigan State lands FCS All-American O-lineman Trent Fraley and dynamic running back Cam Edwards, poised to reshape the Big Ten.

Fresh off publishing a portal frenzy article, Michigan State wasn’t done. Not even close.

The Spartans kept the momentum rolling and landed two commitments that couldn’t wait until tomorrow. Two names that legitimately have the potential to change the Big Ten landscape.

One is an offensive lineman whose father is already a beloved figure in the state of Michigan. The other is a running back who watched the Spartans put on a show in a Monday night basketball game — with his favorite blocker already committed to MSU and now the top running back in the portal class following him to East Lansing.

So who are we talking about? Let’s get into it.

Trent Fraley – OL – North Dakota State

Let’s start with my favorite — even though we’re technically saving “the best” for last.

Trent Fraley, son of Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley, is heading to East Lansing. Fraley comes from North Dakota State, where he established himself as one of the best offensive linemen in the FCS. He’s an FCS All-American center and a Rimington Award winner, accolades that immediately raise eyebrows.

Fraley visited Michigan State during the same weekend the Spartans basketball team hosted USC. Anyone who watched that game knows what happened next — MSU bullied the Trojans in front of a loud, hungry crowd. Fraley and other recruits were in attendance and experienced the full atmosphere: passion, chaos, and a fanbase desperate to win again.

Based on the photos that surfaced from that visit, Fraley looked like he was having the time of his life. It didn’t take long to feel like East Lansing might be home.

That feeling became official today.

Fraley’s commitment marks another massive addition for Pat Fitzgerald and his staff as they overhaul an offensive line that, frankly, was putrid last season. The Spartans have now added:

  • Ben Murawski, the No. 4-ranked OT in the portal (UConn)
  • Nick Sharpe, a guard from South Carolina
  • Trent Fraley, an elite center from NDSU

Suddenly, a unit that forced quarterbacks into panic throws now has a real chance to keep Aidan Milivojevic upright.

Fraley also brings elite football pedigree. Hank Fraley has been with the Lions since 2018, and Trent has been around NFL offensive line rooms his entire life. There are photos of him all over Lions practices, soaking up knowledge.

On a personal note, I once met Hank Fraley during Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Alabama. He shared a beer with a group of aspiring journalists and talked football like we’d known him forever. I’m sure he doesn’t remember it — but it’s wild now writing about his son coming to East Lansing to play Big Ten football.

Full circle.

Cam Edwards – RB – UConn

Now for the headliner.

Cam Edwards is officially a Spartan.

Edwards also happened to be in town for the MSU–USC basketball game, which now makes two football commits who attended that game and left convinced. Tom Izzo might deserve an assist here — and he’s already said publicly that he’s doing everything he can to help Pat Fitzgerald land recruits.

Edwards follows his lead offensive lineman Ben Murawski from UConn to Michigan State. That familiarity matters — and so does production.

Last season, Edwards:

  • Rushed for 1,240 yards (15th most in the nation)
  • Scored 15 rushing touchdowns (tied for 13th nationally)
  • Has one year of eligibility remaining

Simply put, he’s the best running back in the portal class.

This commitment naturally brings up memories of Kenneth Walker III. And to be clear — that’s not a fair comparison. Walker was special, and expectations like that shouldn’t be placed on Edwards.

But the impact potential is real.

Michigan State lost leading rusher Makhi Frazier to the portal and was expected to lean heavily on Elijah Tau-Tolliver. Now, while Tau-Tolliver will still have a role, it’s hard not to view this as Edwards’ backfield moving forward.

Final Thought

Trent Fraley and Cam Edwards bring more than talent. They bring edge, leadership, and identity to a program searching for all three.

The portal frenzy isn’t slowing down — and Michigan State might finally be turning chaos into opportunity.
