Flip season is in full effect for the Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day.
Earlier this week, the reigning National Champions managed to flip another highly-touted recruit in 2026 four-star cornerback Jay Timmons from the Florida State Seminoles. However, the big-time commitment of Timmons was only the beginning of Day’s quest on the 2026 recruiting trail.
According to Rivals on Friday, 2026 three-star offensive lineman Mason Wilhelm has flipped his commitment from North Carolina to the Buckeyes.
Wilhelm, the son of former Ohio State offensive lineman and All-American Matt Wilhelm, is a top 60 player in the state of Ohio, according to 247Sports’ Composite. The St. Edwards High School product was an All-Ohio Honorable Mention as a junior, serving as the team’s offensive tackle in 2024.
Prior to his recent flip, Wilhelm quickly announced his commitment to the Tar Heels in the summer after receiving an offer from the program. However, this was short-lived, as Day offered the talented linemen and received a commitment from Wilhelm on Friday.
Looking ahead at the Buckeyes’ 2026 recruiting class, the group is currently the eighth-highest rated program, according to 247Sports’ Composite. Day’s incredible class is led by five-star wide receiver commit Chris Henry Jr., while also featuring a total of 14 four-star commits.
As for Wilhelm, he joins an impressive bunch of offensive linemen, with four-star prospects Sam Greer and Maxwell Riley being the top linemen in the class. However, it would make sense for Day to pursue Wilhelm, as the class included just one interior offensive lineman in three-star recruit Tucker Smith.
Luckily for the program, Wilhelm may not be the only interior offensive lineman that is on the team’s radar.
With the UCLA Bruins firing head coach DeShaun Foster during the 2025 season, the move paved the way for Day and the Buckeyes to be back in the picture for 2026 four-star offensive lineman Micah Smith.
Ohio State was one of Smith’s top schools before choosing the Bruins, but Foster’s firing could help Day’s efforts in poaching the young prospect.
During the team’s week six contest against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Florida native was at the dominant victory on an official visit to the program. Following his trip to Columbus, Smith would take an additional official visit to Texas, as they took on the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry.
