The Green Bay Packers are 6-3-1 as they head into their Week 12 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Much of the Packers' success has come behind their defense.
Green Bay has invested a ton into the defense, notably with the trade for Micah Parsons before the season.
One player who has gone under the radar for their production is defensive back Javon Bullard. Bullard has been one of the best slot corners in the NFL, as he leads the league with the lowest yards per snap allowed at 0.64 yards.
This is a phenomenal production from the Packers' 2024 second-round pick. Bullard was drafted as a safety, but 2024 fourth-round pick Evan Williams stepped into that role opposite Xavier McKinney.
However, Bullard's versatility allowed him to move into the slot, and he is performing at a high level. His presence has been pivotal for Green Bay's defensive back room, as the signing of Nate Hobbs hasn't panned out thus far.
“He can kinda do it all— He’s a player you don’t wanna take off the field," defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley said.
The Packers' offense has been inconsistent all season, and they have had to rely on the defense to win many of their games.
While the defense has played well, they have struggled to turn teams over. Green Bay failed to capitalize against the New York Giants in Week 11, as they dropped four interceptions. Williams did intercept Jameis Winston at the end of the game, but it could've been a blowout if they had taken advantage of the takeaways.
The Packers are entering an important stretch of the season, as they have three straight divisional matchups.
Green Bay came into the season with Super Bowl aspirations, and they have shown flashes of being a contender, but have lacked consistency. They have suffered disappointing losses to the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers, and could've taken down the Philadelphia Eagles if the offense had shown up.
The Packers will continue to lean on their defense down the stretch with players like Bullard stepping up, but they will need Matt LaFleur's offense to show up consistently.
