The Green Bay Packers are on a two-game skid, but received some positive news on Thursday. Pass rusher Lukas Van Ness returned to practice for the first time since Week 6.
Van Ness suffered a foot injury in Week 6 against the Cincinnati Bengals and hasn't played since. However, his return to practice is a positive sign for Green Bay.
The 2023 first-round pick was off to a solid start this season, benefiting from playing alongside Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary on the defensive line.
Through six games, Van Ness had 11 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss, and six quarterback hits.
When he returns, the 24-year-old will join a defense that has been playing at a high level. Despite back-to-back losses, Green Bay's defense has been doing its part. They held the Carolina Panthers to 16 points and the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to 10 points.
While Jeff Hafley's group has played well, they will welcome Van Ness back. Adding another pass rusher could make the defense even more potent during the back half of the season.
With Parsons and Gary taking up most of an opposing offense's attention, it frees him up to have plenty of one-on-one opportunities. If Van Ness can take advantage, it could unlock another level for the Packers' defense.
For Green Bay to become a contender, the offense will need to step up. Head coach Matt LaFleur has received major criticism for his playcalling during the losing streak.
The offense was held to 13 points against the Panthers and just seven against the Eagles. This is a Packers team with Super Bowl aspirations, but if the offense can't get rolling, it won't matter if the defense is playing at an elite level.
Van Ness was limited in the Packers' practice on Thursday and may not return for their Week 11 matchup against the New York Giants. However, he is making progress toward his return and will be a welcome addition to the defensive line.
The Packers will look to snap their two-game losing streak on Sunday as they continue to get healthier.
