If the Philadelphia Phillies are serious about continuing to push all their chips toward winning right now, a move for Bo Bichette makes a ton of sense. And based on the latest reporting, this isn’t just speculation or offseason noise, as the interest appears to be very real.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Phillies recently met with Bichette, and all indications are that the meeting went well.

“Bichette/Phillies meeting is said to have gone very well fwiw. Bichette admires ‘first class’ organization. Other pluses: roster, park, Mattinglys link, spring proximity to home. Would Phils need to deal Bohm, do lesser C than JT? Other Bo suitors: Jays, Red Sox, NYY, LAD, more,” Heyman wrote.

It’s easy to understand the appeal from Bichette’s perspective.

Philadelphia offers a true win-now roster, a front office that has shown it is willing to spend and take swings, and a clubhouse built around star power and October expectations.

The connection to Don Mattingly is also noteworthy and keeps popping up for a reason, as familiarity and trust still matter at the highest level.

From the Phillies’ side, I like the fit quite a bit.

Bichette isn’t just a big name, as he’s a player who would slide directly into what this team is trying to be right now. He brings contact ability, postseason experience, and another right-handed presence to a lineup that can swing it when they’re playing at their best.

Of course, a signing like this would cause some other things to happen. An Alec Bohm trade might become necessary to balance the roster, and the catcher situation would almost certainly change, with J.T. Realmuto potentially being left out of the plans due to his expected free agency deal.

That’s the cost of doing business when a team chases elite talent.

The other reality here is the market.

The Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers will all help drive up the price. It's not the end of the world, but it also goes to show that Bichette will be expensive and the Phillies need to be prepared for that.
