The Philadelphia Phillies are more concerned about re-signing Kyle Schwarber than anything else right now, but they still need to make some additions in order to bolster their chances of truly competing for a World Series title next season.
The Phillies have been eliminated from the NLDS in back-to-back campaigns in spite of winning 95-plus games both times, so clearly, change is needed, and while Kyle Tucker is the big fish on the free-agent market, Philadelphia may go in another direction.
Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter is predicting the Phillies to land one of the top players on the open market, but it isn't an outfielder. Instead, he has them bagging third baseman Alex Bregman, as he is projecting Bregman into their opening day lineup for 2026.
"Third baseman Alec Bohm was a non-tender candidate, and while he was ultimately tendered a contract, he could still be a trade chip after some rumblings he could be moved last winter," Reuter wrote. "Moving him would open the door for a run at Alex Bregman, whose ability to make a major impact in 2026 fits the team's closing window of contention."

The general expectation has been that Bregman will re-sign with the Boston Red Sox, but given that he is one of the hottest commodities available this winter, the Red Sox may ultimately have some difficulty retaining him.
Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI over 495 plate appearances in 2025 while also playing his typical strong defense at the hot corner.
The 31-year-old may no longer be the top-tier offensive force from his early years with the Houston Astros, but he still boasts a lifetime .846 OPS in 10 big-league campaigns and would comprise a major upgrade over Bohm, who has bene a major disappointment in Philadelphia.
Bregman is a Scott Boras client, so it would not be the least bit surprising if his free agency drags out until Boras ensures that the three-time All-Star finds the very best deal.
The longer Bregman remains out on the market, the better the chance the Phillies may have of retaining him, especially considering that it would allow them to take care of business with Schwarber first.
We'll see if Philadelphia can ultimately land Bregman in what would actually be a rather surprising move, as it is difficult to see him departing Beantown.
